Conference Weakness Talk

It seems that the talk of the conference being weak coincided with Clemson starting to win the ACC and National Championships . I don’t recall as much talk about the conference being weak when Clemson wasn’t winning conference championships and had less success on the field. Just wonder if the conference will be considered weak if FSU or Miami were at the top instead of Clemson

Clemson started winning right after this.
ESPN inked its current extension with the SEC (which includes basketball) in 2013, when it agreed to a 20-year, $2.25 billion pact, which worked out to $150 million per season.
No longer "current" but funny how this is when it started. Ground breaking at the time.

Has more to do with FSU and VT. Also Miami, GT, Louisville. No one really believes in the ascendant Pitt and Miami this year. Our schedule is not what it was even 5-6 years ago.

when it came time to put-up or shut-up, Clemson played and beat the likes of Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Alabama.
Were there years when the ACC was down? Sure there were. Does the league, as a whole, need to step up and stop struggling with teams like ODU, App State and ECU? Absolutely !!
Does that mean Clemson is weak by association? Ask Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Alabama.

The ACC is weaker than during the Natty years

And it hurt us in our last two CFP appearances where we struggled with OSU, and lost big to LSU and OSU. A better conference / schedule makes a team better.
Clemson is accused of getting an easy path to playoffs. Whether true/false, fair/unfair, or just sour grapes: it’s not something we should aspire to.

We did not have good OL’s in those games. Their D lines dominated the line of scrimmage. Bad recruiting, lack of development, youth? who knows but we can only go as far as the OL can take us.

With the exception of UNC we literally blew everyone away all year by at least 2 TD and usually emptied the bench and won by way more, including 62-17 in the ACCG.
A team needs some struggles to grow into full potential. And we had potential, up 17-7 on LSU.

2016 9-3 Bowl Record Bowl Challenge Cup Winners

2016 the ACC was 9-3 in bowl games and won the Bowl Challenge Series Cup!
The narrative about the ACC is "real". But, it is also overblown. Things can be real, but also blown out of proportion.
Who in the Big 10 besides Ohio State has sniffed a Championship in the last twenty years? Nobody! I'll give you 22 years and still nobody, in fact, I think I'll give you 24 years and nobody besides Ohio State has done anything related to winning a National Championship. Because that's what it all boils down to right?
FSU won it twice since then(99, 13). VT at least played for it in 00. Miami won it in 01, was robbed for it in 02 by O 1 and 4 State. Clemson has played for it 4 times and won two.
That's a parody of a league as opposed to the Big 10 "one-trick pony"! Yet, nobody talks about how weak the Big 10 is. The reason: "we get convinced by the marketing that they are great when they are just alright"! Large TV interest/markets so you have to hype/prop them up!
The Big 12 has more teams that have won it in Oklahoma(3) and Texas(05). But, that's it!!!! The Pac 12 has the Southern Cal Run in 03, 04. They played for it in 2005 and lost to Vince Young and Texas. Oregon played for it in 2014 losing to Rural Meyer.
But, that's all folks! No other conference "besides the leading SEC" can boast of having that number of teams currently in its league; play for or win a National Championship.
So, people can keep getting "Moo Cow'd" and led to the slaughter or they can look at the real data! P.S. I know Miami and VT were not in the ACC at the time: but they are in the ACC now which is why I said, "current ACC teams"!

The talk about the conference being weak has been going on since the 1960s. I'm not sure why you think it's just now happening.

We never heard about conference strength because it didn't matter in the pre-CFP days. You had to be either 13-0 or 12-1 with multiple Top 25 wins to be in the Natty prior to 2014, and the ACC never had any of those teams so it never mattered what our conference strength was.
Once they expanded to 4 teams and you had to start debating whether a 12-1 team should be ahead of a 13-0 team, or comparing multiple 1-loss teams for the final spot, then conference strength actually mattered.

As an FSU fan, we heard it all the time. "What if there are 3 unbeatens? FSU will get left out because of their weak conference." Or, "FSU lost a game. It will take a miracle for them to get into the playoffs. They need every conference except one to have two losses."
Heck Bobby had to answer questions for two years, "Why did you choose the ACC over the SEC? Are you afraid to play in the SEC?"

VT, GT, Miami and Clemson

VT, GT, Miami, BC and Clemson were frequently ranked and highly regarded(not at the top; but well respected and ranked).
If FSU had to answer for being in the ACC what about Miami playing San Diego State, Rutgers and a Big East schedule? But, nobody wanted a piece of: "The Canes"!
I think real football people can look past the conference patch on a team's jersey and tell if they can play ball or not!
Historical data that anybody can look up suggest things are cyclical and that the current Pile Ongoing on of the ACC is overblown and exaggerated to a degree! Because teams aren't living up to expectations or they are losing to foes they should beat. But, it happens yearly in every conference. It's just not piled on because it doesn't fit the narrative that only the SEC and Big 10 know how to play football.
Duke beating Big 10 west representative Northwestern in Illinois a few seasons ago says hello. So does San Jose State whipping "Suuuueeewwwweeeeeee Arkansas" in Fayetville. Every conference has its bad losses, but not all conferences get it just layed on a mile thick like the ACC does.
End of the day; that goodness it doesn't matter as much moving forward! In this format, unless we have a complete breakdown; Clemson should be in the mix! And ultimately that's all I am concerned with.

The conference did become weak and the conversation was that Clemson has an easier path. It was fair.

Conference is weak. During the FSU domination days , ACC was on par with SEC. A lot has changed since then. SEC is now a super conference. They expanded with football schools. We expanded with Yankee academic institutions that happen to have a football team.
