I fully realize it's his decision to make, but I have never personally

understood why someone as highly rated as Trotter is would opt out of doing the drills and running the 40 at the NFL Combine. Unless, of course, he is hurt, which we have heard nothing about, if that is the case. As he plans, he can do all the drills at Clemson's Pro Day, but it seems to me the lights shine brightest, for sure, at the Combine, and that is where you want to cement the tangibles for the NFL teams. Do the drills there, and you never have to do them again.

If somehow he thinks his time would disappoint people, he is only inviting that speculation by putting off running the 40. As I said, his, or any other players personal decision to make, but not one I would make if I were somehow gloriously put in his position.

I think there is some strategy that comes into play with some of these guys. To me the draft is a double edged sword. Look too good and you end up on a crap team that may hurt your long term chances of staying in the league. Mid to late first round and second round you may get picked up by a team you want to be on and lead a productive career. I have zero first hand knowledge of how it all works but watching from afar it seems it is more complicated than we know

Unless your name is Manning, a player doesn't really have any power over where

they go, they have to go where they are drafted, if they want to play in the league. I always thought it was pretty pompous of the Manning family to get together and kind of dictate where they would NOT play, as Eli did, and Peyton, to some extent. I guess Archie taking his lumps all those years with the Saints made him not want the same fate for his boys.

That is the sad part of the NFL draft. Unless blockbuster trades are made, the best players are going into the absolute worst situations, and if you are a QB, especially, you WILL take some serious lumps and have serious growing pains, before any success comes your way. Even Peyton Manning and Troy Aikman, two of the most successful ever to do it, struggled mightily their first couple of years.

Sorry but with absolute certainty...

the stratagem your suggesting has never occurred-ever: Money, ego, and the arbitrary movement of picks during the draft from team to team–

In the absence of information, I assume the best. That would be Trotter has a good team around him who understands the process and they are all working a plan to which will support him in reaching his goals.

It’s not just Trotter, he is a franchise with advisers that know what they’re doing. They are well educated on the ins and outs of things that don’t make sense to us. If there was any pressure from his future employer he’d be lining up.

the ProDay #s do not hold the weight the combine #s do. A 4.4 at the ProDay might be legit but it's not likely. Pro-Day #s(at any school) are generally skewed to the benefit of the player for a variety of reasons. Pro day results="player curve grading scale", if you will. E.g., Aidan Hutchinson, Michigan Pro Day, event: Bench Press-28 reps recorded but clearly had help from his spotter on at least the final 6 reps. This would not have occurred at the NFL Combine–

I heard an analyst talk about how guys try to game the systems sometimes

He specifically talked about a player who was considered undersized and was not participating in drills at the combine because he was trying to put on as much weight as he could. So he went to the combine to put a favorable weigh in number on his profile and only did medical and interviews. Then he got back down to his playing weight for the pro day so he could perform at his best during drills. Don’t know if that’s Trotter’s thinking but it’s something that happens.
