Great pitcher.

As Braves fans, we never got to see the real Bruce Sutter.

His arm was already pretty much shot when the Braves signed him. He hung on long enough to get save No. 300.

In his prime he had the best splitter I ever saw. When it reached the plate it fell off a table.

I have a Bruce Sutter story.

Oct 14, 2022, 2:52 PM

My parents took me and my brother to Braves Spring Training in 1984 when they trained in West Palm Beach.
Spring training was a lot different back then from now, with double headers being the norm and the foul territory being occupied while the games were being played by all manner of people, execs, players, reporters, ground crews etc..
It was the second game of the day and I was a bit bored so I left our seats and started exploring the stadium. I soon found out that there was basically no security in the stadium and that I could confidently go anywhere.
So I noticed an open gate to the field where players could come and go to the bullpen area. I walked among the people on the field and strolled into the bullpen and sat on the bench. The Braves had just acquired Sutter and he was up and throwing. He was supposedly hurt but it sure looked like he was hurling lightning to me. After A few throws I soon caught his eye. I thought I was in trouble but he must have thought I was another players or execs kid, so he started asking me to critique his pitches. I' d suggest he throw a slider outside and he'd throw it. Curve balls, off speed, whatever..he'd humour my request.
He really made my day as I was in heaven sitting in the bullpen with all the players.
He was a really nice guy to me, so I hate to hear this news.

That differed contract he got from the Braves is legendary, 1.12$ million for 30 years, with a final payment of 9.1$ million this year. He was the Braves version of Bobby Bonilla. Anyways it’s been 30 years since Sid Bream slide home safe.
