got Dabo the Clemson job were pretty amazing. For TDP to take Bowden's recommendation to name Dabo Interim, and later to make him the "real" Head Coach, having never been even a Coordinator, took a lot of courage. And, although it was never publicly said, I believe that a portion of the fanbase continuing to make their displeasure about that decision known, especially after keeping Dabo on after the mediocre 2010 season, led to Terry Don Phillips retiring as AD in 2012. We owe TDP an unpayable debt for his support of Dabo.

I was among those who were not happy about the decision to hire Dabo as head coach.
I have also said that I have never been happier to be so wrong.

there are a WHOLE LOT OF US who questioned the hire.
Still were a lot of questions about the hire with Spurrier's "peating" business against Clemson.
AND virtually ALL have been just like you...happy to have been wrong!

Promoted From Within. L.I.A.Bottle. No Way!

We promoted a coach from within the Clemson program who, "wanted to be here". Who made a point of being here at Clemson?
Not lightning in a bottle the way I see it. Fate.
Clemson people realizing who they had in their ranks and giving them an opportunity.

Re: Coots realizing he’s no Dabo, and never will be

The sun has shined favorably on Beamer, IMO. He has gotten more wins out of his talent that I would have expected, partly just due to some good fortune.
KY’s QB being injured. Catching Mullen on his way out the door last year, Harsin in a revolving door at Auburn last year and Jimbo in disarray this year. Plus to his credit, he’s mostly beaten who he is supposed to have beaten. No losses to G5 or FCS schools, and we all know that is very possible at Scar (shout out to App St and Citadel).
His recruiting is not close to elite, but not horrific. Probably similar to Muschamp. He’s trying to use the portal, which makes sense for a school with a wretched history, and has had some limited success with it.
100% agree he ain’t Dabo. He speaks an awful lot but I’m not sure there’s much “there” there. Just saying the key phrases that he thinks a young coach should be saying, but it’s not even coach speak but something worse - like an actor playing a role but no substance.

Few anticipated the complete collapse of Auburn, Florida and A&M.
I think he has been more lucky than good.

Oh yes, definitely agree. That’s what I was trying to convey. He’s had some fortunate breaks thus far leading to a 12-9 record, a little better than their .500 history. But that luck won’t last and he will have a losing season or two before they fire him.
I think once a young guy fails, they go back to the geriatric route with their next hire. Perhaps they can poach Mack Brown from the Holes.

"lightning in bottle," with "flash in the pan." I could be wrong, but I didn't take that post to be claiming Dabo was a "flash in the pan" fluke, but rather, that Dabo's kind of talent isn't something ou can dial up, it's "lightning in a bottle." I think that's what he meant. That's my understanding anyway.

Well, they will learn that"cheerleaders" are really good if they also know how to coach football and hire competent (and build) assistants and staff!
