I need someone to educate this….

4

old wind breaker. The kids on the beach at the IOP yesterday were taking part in Senior Cut Day according to the news. What in Hades is that?

When I was in school back in the 1800s, if you got caught cutting class you were paddled and suspended. When you got home you were paddled again. If you were a senior and it was only a few days until graduation, you were not allowed to take part in the graduation ceremony. That was a big deal back then because you didn’t graduate from kindergarten, grammar school, middle school and high school. You only graduated from high school and you weren’t bored with the whole process. It was your one and only chance to be honored for succeeding in school.

Today they encourage the kids to cut class? What is this land coming to? They already get fall break, spring break and about twenty holidays. And if the parents want to go on vacation, they simply just hold their kids out of school and go. We got none of that.

I guess it has something to do with fragile egos, stress reduction, safe spaces and racism. Everything else does.

Please enlighten this stupid old man.

Senior cut day has been around for decades, going back as far as the 70s of not further. Most every senior in high school at this point i the year has already solidified their graduation. The issue here is that local PD knew about it and didn’t prepare.

Wait, it’s the PD’s fault?

No it is not the PDs fault dummy. But it is their responsibility to protect and serve the public. That is after all what we pay taxes for. They did not prepare for this event knowing the risk involved with hundreds of stupid teenagers gathering on the beach

By prepared, do you mean mandate bullet proof vests on the beach.

Lol….you’re ridiculous.

No I mean a larger police presence, or in this case any police presence. Kids…and criminals aren’t so emboldened when there is a noticeable police presence around.

IOP PD has 4 patrol officers covering 24 hours. And isn’t it just like kids/water to take the path of least resistance? But then again, I’m a dummy

Apr 8, 2023, 7:08 PM

Wando high alone has about 1000 seniors. Factor in a few extra hundred kids from other schools and those underclass men that went along with former students, there was probably anywhere from 1000 to 2000 kids gathered at one location.

So 4 patrol officers…..?

And don’t take the dummy sleight personally, it was just a response to the ridiculous insinuation that I was somehow blaming law enforcement for the decisions of a few stupid misguided teenagers

Not the 70s

This did not exist, at least in SC, in the 70s. I was there.

My class had it in 1972. It wasn't a holiday or anything and probably not an excused absence but was a known event throughout the school. All seniors didn't participate.

I finished in 1980. We knew about what was called senior skip day. Classes of ‘77, ‘78, 79 had one each of those years we were there. We just carried on the tradition. We did ours in May. As the poster above said , we were in the clear at that juncture. Byrnes HS, Duncan, SC

They had senior skip day at Byrnes when my dad graduated in 74 and me in 06, only difference was my grandpa sent him to work in the cotton mill when he found out he wasn’t in school, and I hid from them both at a friends house playing video games. Also think we had a skip day for both semesters.

Those who can get away with it with no real punishment by parents will do it half the time.

The school can't do much unless a student's attendance is just terrible already. The school protest if there is no one in class to teach....but if there are only 3 or 4 in a classroom....the show must go on.

You don’t understand

1

Apr 8, 2023, 6:29 PM

The stress levels on these kids. It’s so hard to have an I phone 14 like everybody else. It’s hard to be respectful to the boys and girls, since they don’t know which is which. It’s hard to have just the right amount of holes in their jeans. It’s hard to actually talk to friends, since most or their communication is through a keyboard. Etc, etc…..
Seriously, all these things we( I) criticize are not their doing, but they do suffer from it. I have no answers, but I think it is only going to get worse.

Just more evidence of kids with no respect for others. Won’t be any consequences. I’m sure they will spin it to be someone else’s fault.

So having graduated from a high-school in North Charleston in the mid 80's I can tell you senior cut has been around even before then. For us it was always the Friday before prom and guess what? We went to the Isle of Palms. One thing though we didn't bring guns and we didn't get into big fights. We drank we had fun.

choice: 3 licks with a big wooden paddle that had rows of 3/8" hold drilled in it to add velocity, or a 3-day supension and a phone call to my parents. I took the licks instead of being murdered by my Daddy.

The principle and vice-principle made me sweat it out. They flipped a coin to determine who got to give me the licks. The principle won, and he really enjoyed it. I had to bend over and grip the back of a chair. The first lick lifted me off the ground. I fought back tears on the second one, and by the third one, my asscheeks were literally numb.

There are a few different issues with the IOP event:

Kids are stupid, irresponsible, and entitled. And society does nothing about it.

IOP police are incompetent. They planned to beef up patrols starting today. It’s 55 degrees and raining. Yesterday was a well known, planned, mass gathering at the beach with beautiful weather. Today was a ghost town. Awful planning.

Charleston school district is a joke. There are way too many off days or half days or early release days. Parents are working, kids are out of school. All the time. Why do they need a half day on the Friday before they get 5 more days off for spring break. The school calendar begs for chaos.

Class of 93 here, we did it and it was harmless. Heck I actually participated my sophomore and jr. year. Drinking was involved one year on a lake. One year it was on Cherry Grove beach. A lot of the adults knew about it and turned a blind eye. Keep in mind we didn’t get all the days off schools get now.

Here’s the key, part all of us survived. Going through the faces in my head a lot of us went on to have nice jobs, raise good kids, and contribute to society. Have a lot of great memories from my teens and usually ends up as conversation pieces when running into old friends. Nothing like seeing someone you haven’t seen in forever and the conversation starts “remember that time”. Next thing you know a hour or two has passed in the conversation.

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.
