CPUmageddon is upon us

Jan 5, 2018, 11:45 AM

http://money.cnn.com/2018/01/03/technology/computer-chip-flaw-security/index.html

I'm not sure this is really something to be overly concerned about. It sounds like it would be a huge pain to implement, especially the Specter one. The Intel one seems a little more worrying because it can be executed remotely via javascript or something else. But even then they would have to hack you first and then gain access. And even then they can't write or delete, only read data.

Fully expect current computers to be slower. Also expect newer chips to not perform as well because of the hardware changes that will need to be made in future new CPU's. Good thing I just bought a new CPU, just in time to be crippled by this ####.

Here's an idea.....encrypt your RAM. RAM speeds today far outstrip actual CPU specs (for overclockers). So the overhead/speed is there to handle encryption on the fly in the RAM and still beat the factory CPU specs for RAM. You can already encrypt your RAM, but the problem is the key would also have to enter your RAM. They need to find a way to encrypt RAM without the key making it to the RAM.

Even then what you get from RAM is raw data. If it's encrypted, you need still to find the key. If it isn't, you still need to figure out how to process the data to extract images, text, or whatever. Which can be done but is also a pain.

There are a million easier ways to hack the average PC than this and it's a shame they're taking these measures to fix a vulnerability that is so low on the average hacker's options list it's not really an option. Now for business servers and the President's computer, etc. these exploits are more than worth the effort. For average people, we're just not worth the time and effort.

Sometimes you've got to take two steps back to go one

step forward. In this case, I'd suggest let's all just rewind to about a 1992 level of technology and start enjoying life more. Just keep the current fuel efficient outboards and high horsepower muscle cars.

I thought that's why we were all on Tigernet?

To live with 1992 technology.

I approve of this line of thinking.

Nobody needs a refrigerator that talks to the internets.

Nobody.

that is part of a bigger plan. Kind of like Duke Energy wanting to 'help' me save money by regulating my air conditioner...Yeah right mahphucka, you ain't fooling me. Sadly, it seems to be what people want these days...Let someone else control the temperature of your beer, they probably know best anyway.

AND..life without cell phones wasn't bad.

Out of town 2-5 days without speaking to anyone you knew? No one thought ill of it. Most of the time, nobody even knew you were gone.

Need to know something RIGHT NOW? Nah..you probably didn't. It could wait until you got to the library, or find someone who did know. And if you forgot about it an hour later, did it really matter anyway?
