The pros and cons of red shirting Chad Kelly

Aug 17, 2012, 7:24 AM

Pros:
- Obviously, he gets the luxury of time to master the offense and get stronger in the weight room.
- He'd be the best squad team QB you could ever ask for.

Cons:
- If Tajh had a season-ending injury, Kelly would give us as good a chance to win as Stoudt or Roberts and might as well get the experience.
- If he's really as good as the reports coming out of camp, his ego may cause problems.

if he gives us "as good a chance" as the others, why not red-shirt him?

Because he's the future and he might as well get the experience. My take is that he should red shirt unless Tajh suffers a season-ending injury. Then the red shirt should come off IF he gives us at least as good a chance at winning.

I think he wins

the #2 slot on talent alone and avoids a redshirt, because I think he's that good. It is up to the coaches to get him to keep the proper perspective. I also think that if Kelly becomes the #2 Stoudt will transfer.

Simple, If TB stays healthy, RS him, if TB get injured you

can always pull his RS if he is your best chance to win. If Cole and Morgan are holding their on, keep the RS. Kelly can get his experience and special packages next year in TBs senior season.

I agree with all of that.

Con - Less Swag

We can always use more Swag on and off the field. I think Kelley avoids the shirt, and you see him in a few packages this season.

If we do not RS Kelly, then hopefully he will get a lot of PT to make it worthwhile. And NOT just mop-up duty like Stoudt has received last season. His arm is his best weapon, and he only threw 21 passes in the 6 games he played in. I was disappointed in how he was used, but I understand why, so I just have to overlook those missed opportunities for Cole.

Of course, I think Kelly will be ticked if he gets a rs.
