Maybe so, but a recent ND practice report has him playing first string. We'll have to play him this year versus one or the other.

It is a rumor that's been going around for awhile. Basically, the skinny is this: because of the so-called "Russell Wilson rule" - that allows graduated players to transfer schools without penalty their final year - a lot of fifth year QB's with uncertain starting positions (or aspirations of bettering their draft stock, as in the case of that QB that's transferring to Oregon this season), can transfer without sitting out that final season. Which basically makes them free agents...and gives them a final chance of making the bigs.
Wilson, you may remember, transferred from NC State to Wisconsin his final season. We got QB Ben Olsen out of Stanford last year courtesy of exactly that same rule. This year the two biggest names on the block are Braxton Miller of Ohio State...and Gholson, who as was pointed out, is from Myrtle Beach. (We offered, but had just gotten Tajh Boyd, on top of Willy Korn and Kyle Parker, and all three guys were Elite 11 QB's coming out of high school.) He didn't see much PT in his future at Clemson and never really gave us a sniff.
If he doesn't win the starting gig at Notre Dame, it's almost a certainty Gholson is going to transfer somewhere. Personally, with a gaping hole at South Carolina, and with him being from the area, I'd call it at least even-money Gholson does indeed wind up a Gamecock if he doesn't emerge as the clear-cut starter with the Irish and does decide to transfer. So anybody who's shocked if that happens probably...shouldn't be.
It's also a distinct possibility, by the way, that Braxton Miller winds up at FSU. It's definitely one of the bigger schools - along with LSU - that Miller has been linked with. So we could actually wind up facing both guys this season.

Read the qualifiers, please. I said - if he doesn't wind up with the starting gig at Notre Dame. Who knows how that goes? Brian Kelly is a sharp coach...all he really has to do is drag the situation out until fall, when it's too late for Gholson to transfer. If he's cynical - and Kelly does seem like a cynical self-serving guy - that's how he'd play it out. So one would suspect it's probable, anyhow, that Gholson stays atop the depth chart at Notre Dame at least through the summer. Of course, a blowup like the one Chad Kelly had at our own Spring Game can change that in a hurry...and that kind of stuff tends to happen, when a guy knows he's losing his grip on the starting job. The pressure for these guys to make it is intense...and they aren't dumb, they know which way the wind is blowing. Especially when they're getting outplayed.
Fifth-year QB's who have one more year of eligibility and no starting gig tend to transfer. Just how college football has gotten, these days. At that point they look around for opportunities...and for familiarity. Gholson's very familiar with South Carolina, and like it or not, they have a big gaping hole - a smoking crater, actually, if the whispers I'm hearing from the South Carolina camp are accurate - at QB. He'd step right in and start for them; they have nobody remotely as talented or experienced as Gholson, at present. A good year at South Carolina and he's back in NFL consideration.
Like it or not, that's reality. But I'd still bet real money that if something happens between now and August that convinces Gholson he is not The Man at Notre Dame, he winds up a Gamecock.

It's not reality. Heck it's hardly even conjecture. You're making things up as you go along. Puhleeze stop. You're not hearing any whispers from the #### camp. You're reading nonsense on the internet, at best. Let me know how much real money you would like to put down.

He was readmitted to Notre Dame. His year there should satisfy the SEC's rule. That was put into place so you couldn't go somewhere and get our of jail immediately after being suspended at the first school.

Also, there was an article on here a few days back from ND's spring report saying he was looking great in camp and spending a majority of time with the first team over Malik Zaire...why would a starting qb at a program like ND leave and go to a dumpster fire like SCU? I don't buy it...sounds like wishful thinking at best

Didn't say it was a good fit. I don't think it is. Especially the way this would play out, Gholson would have to transfer sometime this summer, get maybe a month or so - if he's lucky - to work out with the team in the summer, and then, with guys he doesn't know, and an offense he doesn't know - and isn't remotely the same as what Kelly is running up there at Notre Dame - he'd have to adapt on the fly, basically cold. Which is a tough ask, and not exactly a recipe for success. Dunno how well Gholson fits the Fun-n-Gun or Cock-n-Fire or whatever it is Spurrier's calling it these days anyhow. Spurrier does not protect his QB's; his idea of "max protect" is five guys in the pattern, and he really doesn't care if his QB gets his ribs staved in as long as he's delivering the ball to the open guy, so Gholson's resolve and testicular fortitude would assuredly get put to the question, and early. Plus there's the interesting factoid that Spurrier has never had a black QB before. Would he connect with Gholson at all?
Again, all that's probably beside the point...because Gholson hasn't even transferred yet, and again, may not. If he holds onto the starting gig at Notre Dame, no way he transfers. But all these fifth-year guys who haven't locked up a starting spot assuredly have Plan B's in their pocket, it's part of the game, these days. Braxton Miller, like I said, was known to have shopped around to both FSU and LSU when it became apparent JT Barrett was the real deal; it's actually a little shocking Meyer managed to hold onto him even after Cardale Jones appeared and won them the national title. And yes, Richmond dear, it's more than conjecture. I'll leave it at that. People talk.
One way or another, it's highly likely we'll be playing Gholson this year, though, either with Notre Dame, or with South Carolina. Dunno why that's worrisome to people...I mean, he's decent, sometimes, but obviously, he's been up-and-down like a yo-yo at Notre Dame, and he's no Jameis Winston or even a Braxton Miller. Do people really expect Spurrier to walk Alfred E. Newman outta the tunnel at QB this year? 'Cause if The Visor doesn't find somebody this summer, and in a hurry, he may actually have to, from what it sounds like down in Cola right now. I'm still hearing former walk-on Perry Orth would probably be the guy if the season started tomorrow. Which raises eyebrows. Spurrier's gotten credible performances out of marginal guys before, but that'd be some kind of job, there, to do it with a walk-on who attempted all of maybe six passes last year. If it wasn't Spurrier we were talking about, in all fact, I'd be looking at the Gamecocks and be thinking they were a 3-9/4-8 team this next year. On paper, their talent is just that shockingly bad right now. If they don't get a Gholson or someone similar they could be in for a...fascinating season.
