All things considered

Fascinating read:

"These are perilous times for news organizations. Last year, NPR laid off or bought out 10 percent of its staff and canceled four podcasts following a slump in advertising revenue. Our radio audience is dwindling and our podcast downloads are down from 2020. The digital stories on our website rarely have national impact. They aren’t conversation starters. Our competitive advantage in audio—where for years NPR had no peer—is vanishing. There are plenty of informative and entertaining podcasts to choose from.

Even within our diminished audience, there’s evidence of trouble at the most basic level: trust.

In February, our audience insights team sent an email proudly announcing that we had a higher trustworthy score than CNN or The New York Times. But the research from Harris Poll is hardly reassuring. It found that “3-in-10 audience members familiar with NPR said they associate NPR with the characteristic ‘trustworthy.’ ” Only in a world where media credibility has completely imploded would a 3-in-10 trustworthy score be something to boast about.

With declining ratings, sorry levels of trust, and an audience that has become less diverse over time, the trajectory for NPR is not promising. Two paths seem clear. We can keep doing what we’re doing, hoping it will all work out. Or we could start over, with the basic building blocks of journalism. We could face up to where we’ve gone wrong. News organizations don’t go in for that kind of reckoning. But there’s a good reason for NPR to be the first: we’re the ones with the word public in our name."

More and more, the American population has little patience to read articles or listen to productions with the instant gratification of media glut through social media and YouTube videos. Posting an article here is usually met with a "der herp" response by someone who won't read it; even the people posting it often are just driven by the headline.

It's hard for news agencies to earn trust when the public is now putting more faith in YouTubers, reality stars, podcasters, and other clowns who stroke their confirmation bias egos. And who fact checks them? Doesn't matter; those entities don't care. They're getting their hits and clicks.

I could post an in-depth economic article that outlines the possible danger of plunging our corporate world into populism with lots of expert analysis (which I did yesterday), but y'all would rather have some guy on Twitter or TikTok spout something to the contrary or off-topic in 30 seconds or 140 characters.

TL : DR simply means, "I'm too stupid and impatient to examine something and form some intelligent thought while learning new information; spoonfeed it to me like I'm 10 years old."

It'll go well beyond this election. We're proper ###### unless the younger generation somehow turns it around. But at this point, people ain't reading or listening to well-researched stuff over the sound of noise and conspiracies. They're uninformed, and they don't care.

Your response is delightfully ironic.

Are you saying you agree with everything he says in the article? Let's see if you actually read it or just cherrypicked.

I used to drive a lot for work back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. I listened to NPR quite a bit and found it both informative and entertaining. I was probably center right republican at that time and thought their news and other news related segments were pretty fairly balanced.

I don’t travel as much now, but will still listen from time to time. From my perspective, there has been a clear leftward shift. Not as drastic as some on the far right might claim, but an obvious shift nonetheless.

I wonder if they (corporation for public broadcasting) have changed their programming/slant to attract/maintain contributions from more left leaning folks as a means of survival? If so, that’s a shame…you can’t maintain balance if you at risk of losing your audience. NPR (CPB) becomes just like all the other news outlets…subject to the whims of their audience, instead of the truth.

It's a great article. A key takeaway that every lefty on the board is guilty of, as far as I can tell, is this:

What’s worse is to pretend it never happened, to move on with no mea culpas, no self-reflection.

The "it" is the list of over-the-top chit done by the left starting with HRC and her taking in $100s of millions and installing her own email server, sending and receiving classified information which 99.9% likely was intercepted by Russia + China, and destroying evidence - all with zero consequences.

"It" continues into the Trump administration with the fake Steele Dossier and fake Russia collusion story, as referenced in the article.

The "it" can also be Hunter Biden, HB's laptop, HB's rides around the world on Air Force 2, and his collecting millions from China and Ukraine.

Will you cata, smitty, etc. finally admit Russiagate was a miscue?

And you people, continuing in the spirit of pretending it never happened, have yet to admit what this guy is admitting - that the media and social media got Biden elected. He says

"I listened as one of NPR’s best and most fair-minded journalists said it was good we weren’t following the laptop story because it could help Trump."

Attitudes like this and similar but more sinister actions by Google, FB, Twitter put Biden in the WH. So yes the 2020 election was rigged in the sense that a few influenced the many with misinformation, disinformation, and withholding information.

None of the three topics he covered were ever in doubt to the non-leftist and non-sheep. But you all in your group think echo chamber knew it all.

And, here you go again using vague terms like Populist to scare the rest of the sheep away from Trump.

If people don't realize that the media and Democrats in Congress were pushing a Russian collusion narrative at the time, then you just weren't awake. Or much worse, you actually wanted it to be true.

Falsehood flies, and truth comes limping after it, so that when men come to be undeceived, it is too late; the jest is over, and the tale hath had its effect: like a man, who hath thought of a good repartee when the discourse is changed, or the company parted; or like a physician, who hath found out an infallible medicine, after the patient is dead.
