Realistic expectations for 2012-2013

May 31, 2012, 7:04 PM

I must admit, I'm jonsing to get this season started, and hear some pads poppin'. With that in mind, I'm curious as to what everyone thinks the realistic expectations for this team should be this season.

For me, I fully expect 10 wins and another appearance in the ACCCG. The only game that might stop us is FSU in the Hassee.

Areas of the team that have me concerned right now is both lines and LB's.

The lines worry me the most because as we've all heard time and time again, games are won and lost in the trenches. Running the football, and stopping the run are always "keys to the game" the majority of the time and with out the fat boys getting nasty down there, neither will happen which puts more pressure on the rest of the team.

The LB conern is just an experience question moreso that anything else. The talent is there, no question, and I expect my worries to be put to rest in short order. You guys might be able to correct me on those fears right now, and I welcome that.

So after all that, what does the rest of tiger nation think?

I think we lose 3

Proven QB and RB. LB is getting rave reviews from the coaches. I worry about depth and overoptimistic expectations ruining this board for 4 months.

AU, FSU, and VT by chance? To be honest, I can see losing three, potentially more, but I want to believe this team will keep taking strides to cut out those foul ups like NCST, WF, MD, and the like. WF and MD should not give us the trouble they do seemingly regardless of the venue. However, that's not anything new to anyone on here. And we've got to get back in the winners bracket against the coots...I've heard about all I want to hear out of them, and I hope Jack's boys start the mouth shutting this weekend.

Honestly... I expect out DL to be as good if not better

May 31, 2012, 7:21 PM

Our line last year was about as experienced coming into the season. I think Carlos Watkins will step in and help immediately and I think Goodman will be a good replacement for Branch and crawford will come in with as much xp as goodman did last year. Deshawn Williams is a monster... so I'm not to worried about that.

O-line I'm nervous about... granted the oline last year was pretty terrible except for Price and Freeman

depth depth depth

is more #1 concern for this team. The first unit potentially is as solid as they get but take out the first unit and it is interesting to see the drop off....

"Clemson Is Coming" says Stephone Anthony (Class 2011)"
"Why NOT Clemson"
"Why Not Dabo"

Good points all around. Maybe I'm listening to the wrong people, but I'm not hearing very good things about the new OL we brought in during the last class either. If anyone has heard different, I'm curious to hear, and I hope I'm wrong. It's amazing what one corp. of guys can control in a football game, but it's an absolute fact, if you can't create running lanes and protect your QB, you're going to have a hard time doing anything offensively. I coached a little HS football the last few years and coached both lines, and when I say trying to get the kids who had the size to play on the line but also had the nasty mentality was very difficult. No matter how hard I tried, you can't teach "want to" and "nastiness".

If they lose more than 3 they deserved to be ripped. The ACC isn't that strong and we get most of our toughest league games at home. FSU is the lone tough road game (Auburn's neutral) we have on the slate. Very few units in the country are as proven as the Clemson offense.

But I wouldn't bank on 11-12 wins. 9-10 is what I think should be expected and more importantly demanded.

7-5 Given our OL and defensive questions***

what would you guess VT's record would be? this should be good because they lose almost everyone

So We're Losing Every Tough Game?

May 31, 2012, 7:39 PM

That's the only way I can see someone saying 7-5.

Must have us losing to Auburn, VT, FSU, GT and USC.

No worries about the lines....

May 31, 2012, 10:02 PM [ in reply to 7-5 Given our OL and defensive questions*** ]

We are playing a straight 5-3 Defense with few tricks or gimmicks ... see the ball, tackle the ball ... simple ... against GTech option, you ... always tackle the QB, always tackle the back, always tackle the pitchman... it really is not that complicated.

12-0 is NOT unrealistic

May 31, 2012, 9:59 PM

The first game sets the tone of course, FSU in Tallahassee? A bit of a test.... if Clemson were to win both of those games (and of course the cup cake games in between), no reason they can't win the rest.... My biggest worry is a "last year", go 8-0, get real cocky, and then get beat by Duke or something ....

7 and 5. Lines on both sides of the ball appear weak.

I thought

May 31, 2012, 10:51 PM

Clemson was going to be terrible last year to be perfectly honest. New QB, unproven WR other than nuke, injury prone rb, and losing that stellar de Bowers. But the tigers proved otherwise. I don't see why this year couldn't match the results.
