This would be my primary vehicle, Mrs No would stick with 4Runner. Might upgrade it later to new 4Runner or Land Cruiser if they ever actually come out.
pre-2024, they offered the Access cab (not 4 door with real backseats), and it had the 2 small doors that opened, so you got easy Access to the space behind the front seats. My '03 has extended cab like that, and access to that rear area is a pain. Of course, it's smaller that recent/new midsize Tacomas.
For 2024, they only offer the Xtra cab in the lower (not any TRD versions) levels. They had to change the name from Access, because it no longer has the small opening rear doors. Great.
If I got a '20-'23 model, I could get the opening doors, but everything else is ancient design. Besides, even though I see a lot of them on the road, there's none for sale anywheres round here. And if they were, price would be close to new.
I don't want a 4 door, don't need the back seat, don't want a 5 ft bed, would be long with 6 ft bed. I don't want a full size truck neither.
I prefer a Toyota, but all the manufacturers are bailing on mid-size extended cabs. Why is that, when you still see a lot of them on the road?
Thoughts, witty remarks, etc?

It remarkable that Toyota could tune the suspension and wind noise to perfectly simulate being on a pogo stick with a hair dryer beside your ear. I see why people love them so much.

But you guys are like a cult, and for all I know people are lining up to pay over sticker so they can have one of the final “old” models. I dunno. I can look up what recent ones are going for at auction though.

Are averaging $32k wholesale right now with about 7k miles on them. 6 months ago that number was $36,500.
On a desirable truck like this most dealers would mark that up about $5k and see how they could do, but that markup might be higher on these. At least you know what they’re paying for them.

wind noise coming from the access door behind the driver's seat as you mentioned. Hopefully not all of them.
So $43K sticker on a loaded '23 or a less-loaded '24. Old design vs new design. V6 6sp automatic vs turbo 4cyl 8sp automatic. rear leaf springs vs coil springs.
Probably the wrong moment to buy, Used '23's and back will get cheaper as '24's get more available and on the road. Local Toyota dealer doesn't have any '24's on the lot yet. But may not be another new '23 well equipped to be had.
Maybe I'll just get a Subaru.

interdasting, thanks.
So a loaded up one of out-going old design vs not loaded up new design, about the same price.

Like you said, there aren't many. But if that doesn't work out, and that's what you want, just get it delivered from wherever it is. It won't cost that much. $300-$700. Or your local dealer could try to get it in store too.

If bigger then can get away with more. That is also why the companies are trying to convince people like me that they need a HD 2500. Sounds like what you need is one of those smaller cab over trucks.

We were promised flying cars, but I have yet to see any evidence of being able to purchase a flying car from Carmax yet. The broken promise of the flying car is probably the greatest disappointment I've experienced as an adult human being.

The current Tacomas have a terrible drivetrain...
3
Feb 9, 2024, 10:44 AM
|
|
The automatic shifts like garbage and the V6 has no torque. The older 4.0L motor is so much better.
The next gen Tacomas will have a turbo 4 that will kill the V6 in power and fuel economy. They also ditch the crappy 6 speed auto.
The 6th Gen 4Runner is a go. They even caught Toyota testing it in full camo the other day. It will likely get the same drivetrain as the new gen Taco. And be offered with a stick for the first time since the 3rd Gen.
