How old were you when you met your wife?

6

Sep 18, 2023, 12:04 PM

You don’t have to say how old you are now but just curious, how old were you guys met your significant other? (Ages plural if applicable) for those of you who are married.

And I’ve been fine doing this while single while having some European flings along the way. But now I’m at the age where it’s like, ok It’s time to find “the one” now so I still some years to travel with her before kids. So I feel like I’m in a critical 1-2 year crunch time now.

This is a bit of a trick question for me and Mumbette.

6

Sep 18, 2023, 12:27 PM

A girl I knew brought her over to my house for us to meet when I was finishing high school at 17, and Mumbette was only 14. She was a knockout, but 14? I just thought she was too young. This was in 1974.

Fast forward to 2014, and I was in the process of divorcing my wife of 28 years. Wasn't looking for anyone, just wanted to survive what might be a ruinous process. I was working out of town, and I posted something on Facebook (nothing to do with the divorce), and one of the comments was from Mumbette. I wasn't even sure she was still alive, to be honest. This was in September, and I was going to be out of town until at least December. We started talking on the phone, caught up on all of the intervening years, always by phone. Started going out in January when I got back home. Got married in October of 2016.

So, short answer is 17.

Is there still love in the relationship?

5

Sep 18, 2023, 12:52 PM [ in reply to Re: How old were you when you met your wife? ]

As opposed to what feels like love but it's just a dread of splitting because it'll be hard. With the kicker that you've tried counseling or given it an honest try and getting it to work.

I'm probably not the best with this one though. My first wife and I got along well. We never argued. But it was clear, probably even before we got married, that we shouldn't be together. It was like living with a polite roommate. We tried counseling, but the love was gone. It also didn't help that there was another guy sniffing around (which, fast forward, he's now suing her in a 9-figure defamation suit, but that's another story). But, we were better friends than spouses, and both being young, not having kids or shared property, splitting was relatively easy. I call it my complicated legal breakup.

I don't argue with my wife now; at least not yelling. If she gets mad at me, it's usually for a reason. And when I get mad and act all passive aggressive, she forces me to talk it out rather than me just sitting on it. No argument/disagree usually lasts more than a few hours, if that. And they're rare. A part of this is we both met later in life, knew who we were, and when it comes to money (which tends to be the root of most marital issues) agree on how to manage it.

But, the big difference is I always feel loved by her. It's never been a question. It was always a question in relationship 1.

I'd think at some point a man needs to accept that it's not them, and that his "type" is really just bad choices. And unless you are just broke, I'm not sure why you'd want to continue to give half (or more) of your stuff and money away...again.

After being married for 16 years, honestly I'm not sure why any man would get married at all at this day and age unless he just really wants kids, and/or has some religious hangup. Anything you want to do with a woman can be done without signing a terrible legal contract with the state.

apart. I know three couples close to us that are going through some sorts of troubles whether it be big fights over financials, sleeping around, or just finding out they really aren't happy with each other. All three are still together, but I know of one actively working on getting a lawyer. The only reason I know that is because they cannot afford a lawyer and we are probably going to have to help pay some of that.

Late 30's, early 40s, all with kids between 3rd grade and high school.

Guy is practically living at girlfriend's house now but still married. Wife is just in a really bad position to do anything and he knows it. He is a terrible person and we have known that for years, she is just finally giving up on holding out for him to be a good guy "again."

Financial issues could be worked out, to an extent. I mean, it's cheaper to keep her, right?

Abuse is a no-brainer as well, not moving past that.

There are issues that I would never be able to get past, but at this point, I would be trying my best to work it out.

To be fair, one couple has started counseling and things look much better for them. It was touch and go for a while.

I just figured life was living together and having fun - we had a few year of that, but she did not want kids and I did - that could have spurned it on. Or maybe he had a big Johnson. She loved doing it for sure. But she got crazy depressed when drinking so that was the bad part.

out there now where the interviewer asks the women (young) around the table for their criteria on height, fitness, income, etc. and they all say 6 feet, fit, and over $100k.

The interviewer explains to them that they have eliminated 99.9% of the bachelor pool. The interviewer then asks them what they bring to the table.

They look unhappy to hear this. I would further add that their grandmothers would make more desirable partners than they would, because they knew how to cook, clean, raise children, and for God's sake, stay home on a few weekends when money is tight.
