With limited risk, but still wanted a return, where would you put it, aside from hookers and blow. Serious answers please. It's someone else's money.

Buy a townhome w cash then rent the townhome.

Aug 7, 2023, 10:00 PM

Real estate market isn’t gonna crash so if you need the money after a few years then sell said townhome.

As a 24 year old, I failed to predict the economic crash

1

Aug 8, 2023, 8:45 AM

that was about to unfold and trusted my experienced realtor who said "this is a $200K home" and "buying a home is one of the best investments you can make".

2

Aug 8, 2023, 9:16 AM

too big of a hurry to sell it. I did make money off the deal and the money made off said deal was used for the current home so I THINK I did that right. Even still If I'd have held on to that place I'd be sitting on a gold mine...well maybe silver mine.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You would have at least doubled your money.

I'm not a patient person when it comes to selling houses

1

Aug 8, 2023, 9:50 AM [ in reply to While I didn't buy my first place until 2010 I too was in ]

I fret too much about the bad things that can happen to them if I hold on (fire, flood, market collapse, etc). So every time I have sold a house, I strive to get rid of it as quickly as possible, even if it costs me some profit.

To me, peace of mind/absence of worry is better for my health than a fatter wallet.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This make it sound like you are selling houses way too

1

Aug 8, 2023, 9:55 AM

often, unless you are in the business of selling houses of course.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

nah, I've sold 3 in my life

1

Aug 8, 2023, 10:23 AM

2 were mine (because I was moving to another city hundreds of miles away), one was the parents (also 200 miles away).

All 3 sold in 2 weeks (or less) at asking price. Looking back I probably priced all of them too low, even though it was market value according to the realtor. I could have hiked the price and waited, but I didn't want to deal with the upkeep 300 miles away waiting for it to sell. If they were across town, it would have probably been a bit different. And after horror stories from friends who had sat on houses for several years trying to sell, I felt EXTREMELY blessed to get rid of them and the stress that comes with that process. Like I said previously, getting out from under it with a few dollars profit was just fine with me.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would put all of it

1

Aug 8, 2023, 8:15 AM

up your butt and around the corner.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sheeet, Ally has about 4.5% on their accounts, I think.

I dumped some in there, even have a "debit" card if I need to withdraw any but I have never tested it. Hopefully it works...one day.

Limited to $50k deposits per day, IIRC. Something weird like that.

they are only at 4.3% now but should the fed start to lower interest rates all of a sudden they will stay up for a few months where the online savings accounts will drop precipitously if that happens.

With the other 140k look around here and see what all deals you can cash in.
