3-4 Defense?

With the depth at DT and the size of our ends, I wonder what we'd look like or perform in a 3-4 defense.

3-4 is extremely susceptible to the run unless you have super elite front three and at least better than average line backers.

We have ton of depth at DT and then why we need to run 3-4? It's not like we're overloaded with talented LBs.
How many coaches in college football who have been successful running 3-4?

How about it in term of percentage? I think I can name more successful 4-3 defense.

The NFL is about evenly split between the two defenses. You can do the same things from either one, but the personnel requirement is different. To be successful in the 3-4, you must have three huge-tall linemen who are as fast as the average line backer. The 3-4 is also a harder defense to execute and to learn. You always have to bring backers, corners, safties, etc. up in run support.

I think we're talking about college football here and there aren't many football programs that run 3-4, let alone being successful at it.
That's my point.

I agree. College programs do not run it due to its complicated schemes and due to the fact they can not keep the right front 3 much less reserves.

The one thing that I can think of that I'd consider running 3-4 is if we have, say, 5-6 5-star LBs at disposal and we only Christain Wilkins, Dexter Lawrence and Rashan Gary at DT. Something like that would have made sense.

GT and effed'em up pretty good. It wasn't a true 3-4 defense, but it confused the #### outta their QB. We got DTs that are faster and stronger than most DEs in the game...we're gonna use them in any formation.

Did we drop them into coverage?
They are DEs not LBs.
Why change defensive alignment and scrap a defense that may have 3 first round NFL DEs and little LB depth for the opposite?
Do you want to completely change our recruiting regimen for DEs and excellent defense for an unproven defense that BV may not even like or be his optimim coaching potential?

Running a 4-3 scheme and then having a DE or a DT dropping down to coverage a few times is completely different from running a 3-4.

Zone Blitz. We've had tackles drop into coverage and make interceptions on zone blitzes too. We aren't moving Watkins to will linebacker though.
Please don't hold your breath till we convert from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense.

..Shaq Lawson is standing on the edge, and sometimes he rushes and sometimes he drops into coverage, that's an example of 3-4. Never said that's our base. My bad, I thought you were saying we never run it, in which case that would be wrong. We run it and versions of it a lot though.

I dunno but I think that school umm Alabama runs one.. Have you looked at our DE size and depth.. they are the size of 3-4 lbs. Our DE's are a bit slight.. and a 3-4 brings more speed to the field. Plus.. we recruit better than GT..Just a thought.. It's mid January..a lot more conversations to go..lol

Alabama has the personnel year in and year out to run that defense. They have the best linemen in the Nation. Their linemen all end up in the NFL.

The 3 means big linemen which we have.
The 4 means linebackers. Defensive ends aren't linebackers. Last year we were #1 in the nation in defense. This year we were in the Top 10 and you want to scrap our defense and start recruiting for a different alignment?
Please call up Coach Venables and tell him.
Please report back what he says.

I actually think we have the LB/DE bodies to at least try it. Not sure about the Nose Tackle or the instinctive LBs who can cover, though.

Venable's defenses are multiple. 3-4, 4-3, nickle, dime, 6 DB's, depending on the offense.

If you're going to run a 3-4 the two main components you're going to need are a massive, space-eating NT, and OLBs that are big enough to occasionally take on OTs aka really fast 4-3 DEs. The reason it's become more prevalent in the NFL is the amount of 250ish pound DEs coming out of college that are too small to be every-down 4-3 DEs, but too talented at pass-rushing to only bring on the field in passing situations. I assume you're saying we should switch to that because of DT depth means you'd have a front consisting of Watkins, Pagano, and Wilkins, and then have whoever we have at DE currently playing the OLB spot. On paper, a 3-4 front of Wilkins at NT, and Watkins and Pagano at the DEs spots doesn't sound too bad, but I'm not sure we have the guys at the second level, and that's key.

Close. A true fresh like smith could easily develop into one but a 3-4 next year would be a disaster. And I question if many of our current ends and tackles really bit a 3-4 end role. A couple of them could do it but overall we would need to recruit and coach to the new scheme and it would be a 2 year transition.

Hope we run more 4-3 under
Sam- Shaq Smith
5 tech DE-Bryant , Gary if we land him would be perfect here
1 tech DT- Lawrence, Pagano if he can add 10 pounds
3 tech DT- Wilkins , Watkins
Leo - Ferrell, Yeargin
Mike- Lamar/Joseph/CSmith
Will- Ben . Would rather have more speed here from RSmith but Ben will work

Thanks for even looking at what I sais.. some of these guys have no idea what we have coming back in the front seven.. All of our DE we have can stand up and play OLB The prototypical 3-4 OLB is 6-4 250-265 lbs. Our DE's are all in that range and our DE's (Huggins/Johnson) will be 290 by tomorrow. We lost a lot this time to the draft. If we could've kept one DE and one safety I'd be cool.. but this time of year is stressful as the teams future is decided by recruiting in the next 3 weeks.
