Bezos/Princeton & Musk/Penn -- NIL Landscape

Jan 5, 2022, 12:36 AM

Either of these two mega-billionaires could set up their Ivy League alma maters to win the national championship in one to three years with university concurrence on admittance policies and reduced academic requirements for football players.

One million per year for backups and ten million-plus per year for stars would quickly bring every qualified top player to Princeton or Penn. And these these magnates make hundreds of millions in less than an hour.

While I would not expect for this Ivy League scenario to happen any time soon, with Musk's penchant for tomfoolery, he would certainly enjoy playing the system for a few laughs as he does with Bitcoin and the Senate.

And in all seriousness, one or two hedge fund managers or CEO's could alter the college football landscape quickly -- I do expect this macro shift to happen over the next few years unless some rules are set up to block it. While most look to the deep pockets at TX A&M, Texas and others, Stanford could be a prime beneficiary of Silicon Valley funding.

Unless they put some life saving measures in college football as we have known it is over...

I believe it will go to super league with rules fair to each member soon, otherwise most colleges will be outbid or out cheated every season.

Parody will be over on a big scale unless you consider no loyalty to be the way everywhere...

The wild Wild West with fans fading away!

Penn and Princeton are members, doesn't allow athletic scholarships nor participation in bowls nor national championships in football. Hence, you never see any of the eight in the Top 25.

Could be the League saw the handwriting on the wall years ago and decided to reign in the football monster before it devolved into what we are seeing today. A close friend, who is a Princeton alumnus and who has attended their games for years, told me while they don't have 100,000 seat stadiums, the rivalries are fierce, the support is strong and they don't have the endless controversies we now face. In other words they simply try to keep a rational perspective about the sport and enjoy the games, perhaps, much as we used to during my days at CU in the 60's. We loved the games, but the sport in of itself did not consume our lives.

Continuing, case in point: in those days most all our games were in the afternoon. The CDA typically sponsored big dances in the cafeteria on Saturday evenings with big name bands...like the Four Tops, Temptations, Drifters, etc. There would have been riots had those games been scheduled late, as to most students, the partying was as important as the gaming! Clemson won the ACC three of my four years...ho hum was the general attitude. And our "bowl" was the Carolina game, as it was to them, due to our lackluster seasons. You didn't see the elaborate tailgating, pre and post game this and that. You went to DV for the games, then rushed back to the dorms to get ready for the dances. And that was that.

Not too bad of a perspective come to think of it.

Of course, much had changed by my arrival at Clemson, SC from southeast VA in 1979 (aka the Ford Years).

The Four Tops, Temps, and Drifters live sound pretty damm good. Looks like your generation had your priorities in order. But to your point, as big as football was in the Ford era, it was still a game. As you know, we went all out with student cheering and screaming in those days, but the student focus on the after party remained in full force from 1979-84.

They were full days, and certainly some of the greatest of my life. What a town! What a university! What a group of lifetime friends! What a great alumni and fan base! Tiger for Life! Go Tigers!

If the Ivy league wanted to get serious about Football, they

would have long before the NIL.

The endowments these schools have is overwhelming and the alluminati alumni base could have created a recruiting machine that could compete with the NFL.

The Ivy league takes pride in being above the interest of the masses. Their sport is collegiate rankings, endowments, and low acceptance rates, with a bit of rowing thrown in for good measure.

They would have to leave early by and join ESECPN

call them, could crash the world economy at any point in time, just by brute force manipulation of the stock market. The only thing that keeps them from doing it is that they would also cost themselves considerable money if their customers had no money as a result to buy any of their goods or services.

It is a very sobering thought.

Hate to imagine how much manipulation is going on "under the radar" right now 76er. But that's another subject for Amphitheater.

Certainly plausible for Stanford alumni to pursue this path.

Arkansas has the Walton guy (good Hs player) and Jerry. They could buy the SEC. That would be funny.
