If the rumors are true and Clemson is heading to the SEC...

11

Sep 28, 2023, 12:49 PM

then I think it is the right move. As a traditionalist and a long time ACC guys, I hate it. But as a realist, I have to accept that times are changing and this is a strategic and necessary move that secures our athletic future, improves our competitiveness for top recruits, brings in more revenue to support Clemson, and prepares us for the next evolution of whatever college football is going to look like down the road.

If it goes through, I applaud our administration and AD for working through the challenges so quickly and bringing this to fruition. And if it isn't true, FU to all the rumor mongers who got it wrong again ;)

I'd look forward to it for the sole reason of seeing Clemson play teams I want them to play more regularly - UGA, Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee.

For those of us who live within driving distance of Clemson, we're all in SEC territory anyway. When I'm not watching Clemson play, I'm tuning into the 3:30 SEC game. I don't particularly care for B1G games outside of maybe Mich-OSU. The other teams are boring

They're not as close as you might think....9 schools have a drive time of > 6 hours from Clemson. Included in those 9 are 6 which have a drive time of > 9 hours.

Better than the B1G where every school is more than an 8 hour drive from Clemson, and 4 schools are more than a 30 hour drive :)

Also, ACC is not that different from SEC in that regard.

GT, Wake, Duke, UNC, NC State, and VT are under 5 (so 6 schools, most of which are in the 4-5 range).

FSU, Miami, UL, UVA, Cuse, BC, Pitt and ND are all over 6 hours, 5 of which are over 9 hours.

Would rather drive to Oklahhoma, A&M, Texas or Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Boston College. Not much of a difference.

Easy decision for me.

Not to mention Cal or Stanford. Good grief, it's a no brainer.

6 hrs is nothing

SEC teams are as close as ACC.

I see a lot of hoping/wishing for the SEC...

but I don't think people realize how broke Disney/ESPN really is. I doubt that ESPN will have the budget authority to pay FSU/CU what amounts to roughly an extra $60M per year for "rights" they already own. On top of this, some rumors indicate that 4 ACC schools could shift, which doubles the additional payout to $120M per year. Disney/ESPN just doesn't have this money - period!

This fact, that Disney is broke should have Clemson and FSU running to the BiG and it's larger new TV deal with three networks.

I hope our BOT sees the bigger picture and doesn't allow regional bias to put ourselves in another TV arrangement wholly dependent upon ESPN. I know it's better than the ACC deal, but in a few years, 2029, the BiG is going up for another renegotiation and their deal that will probably obliterate the SEC who's deal is locked in until 2035 - sound familiar?

While I understand what you are saying, keep in mind that Disney/ESPN is already paying ACC teams but at a lesser rate. So the total would be significantly lower than you are suggesting.

ESPN is probably encouraging this to get out of the ACC contract so that they can cancel the contract with the ACC. That will save them quite a bit of money.

Disney’s annual revenue through June was $87B and ESPN was $4B so while their profits are down considerably, they are far from destitute.

Comcast has exersized their option for Disney to buy them out of Hulu at current market value estimated to be around $20B. Disney currently has about $200M cash on hand. Profits are way down and cashflow will not produce much toward the $20B coming due, despite the all-hands-on-deck layoffs, studio and theme park closure, etc. Hence, all the talk of trying to sell / spin-off ABC and/or other assets. They have serious cashflow problems, but go on looking at the revenue numbers.

OK, how about if look at Gross Profit instead...

"Disney gross profit for the twelve months ending June 30, 2023 was $28.776B, a 3.06% increase year-over-year. Disney annual gross profit for 2022 was $28.321B, a 27.07% increase from 2021."

And I'm certainly not saying they don't have some financial challenges. I was just responding to your comment, "This fact, that Disney is broke..."

They ain't broke.

The projections of huge payouts won't be there from any tv

the big money was there because of cable bundles, but that is dying and will soon be dead.

This will have to go pay per view or paid streaming, which will have a fraction of total revenue and will be a true barometer of the value of college football, which ain't tens of millions per year, per school.

I will believe it when I see it. I still think it’s simply hopeful thinking. It will NOT happen DE, until at least 2025.

Does anyone really think it would be in the middle of an athletic year? If it were announced soon it would certainly be for the summer of 25 or so.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Would prefer the BIG but I'll take the SEC. Just so long

The only way I see it happening, is if ESPN picks up some of the tab for getting out of the GOR, which they would do, if they want to keep Clemson and FSU from joining the B1G. I hope it’s all true!
