If we move off Brownell (which I think we should)

I don't want us to go and hire another Brownell to give us the same results. Right now we pay Brownell a salary in the middle of the pack in the ACC which is what we get in terms of results. We've never been the worst team in the ACC but also never had a realistic shot at winning the conference.
So if we fire Brownell I think we need to up our offer and throw out some dollar signs for a bigger name at head coach. If we don't then our AD has accepted that Clemson basketball will always be mediocre.

We should hire a motivator at a lower salary and let him earn his keep by motivating a winner, put fans in the seats, and then increase the pay. Seems to have worked before.

How about paying a piece rate. X$ per win with a base rate.

Yes, yes, yes, yes. Just like Dabo. Then, if he earns it, raise it.

Getting Dabo was lightning in a bottle. No one; including our own fan base, expected him to be this good.
Using that strategy to get all our coaches is like trying to build a retirement fund off of lottery tickets

Nothing new here, but here goes anyways: It's tough tough tough for a middle tier program (i.e., ours) to attract a top coach and then retain him if he starts winning.
Rick Barnes is the great Clemson success story that comes to mind; we couldn't keep him. I doubt that simply matching Texas's $ offer would have kept him. Barnes bolted because he knew that keeping Clemson competitive against towering BB powers like Duke and UNC, and regularly beating solid programs like those which populate the ACC, would be too tough.
Realistically, who can we get (and retain) that's better than B.Brownell?
Just asking.

I keep seeing this about Barnes and while I do agree with a lot of it, I also thinks it’s a little different now… mostly all due to footballs success the Paw is arguably stronger than its ever been and Clemson is a national brand now… the acc is also not near what it was back then and Barnes knew while his name was hit to leave to not have to compete with the strength of the ACC back then, which it is not near the league it was… the league is very winnable now behind duke…I just think Clemson as a whole is in a lot better position to keep a decent coach around if they win. Again I don’t disagree with what you and others say when you bring up Barnes i just think it’s a diff circumstance now than where we were as a whole back then.

I think that made sense for Rick Barnes at the time, but I don't buy that reasoning anymore. With Coach K leaving Duke and UNC still not quite as good as it once was the path to the championship doesnt go through Tabacco Road anymore. There's opportunity for the right guy to be very successful at Clemson.
I'm not saying we need to try and buy a legend like Coach K out of retirement. But we can certainly try for an up and coming assistant coach at a proven winner.

Anyone is at least a start. We need someone who can inject some energy into the fan base and program.
