Im interested in your thoughts on this

There has been a lot written about Ohio st spending 13 mil on NIL. Questions…

1) Do you think it’s true?
2) Do you think it will work?
3) Do you think Oregon is actually building a monster?
4) Can we keep up?

There is a huge law of diminishing returns on the NIL. Look at Texas A&M who throws money around like coca cola and what do they have to show for it? Clemson is more than fine with NIL coupled with how Dabo runs things.

Oregon will continue to be an also ran.

I totally disagree about Oregon. Why you think that? Lanning is a good coach and is recruiting well.

Lanning is a good coach and doing well - no doubt. But they are going to the Big 10, which isn't deep but they still have to deal with Ohio State, Pedo state, and now add in UW, USC, and UCLA.

Oregon is a small state and losing a lot of their natural rivals. The closest school other than UW is a thousand miles away in LA. I think this will take its toll on recruiting.

Doesn't Oregon have Nike throwing a ton of money at them, or has that stopped being the thing at Oregon?

Uncle Phil still has a lot of pull and throws the money to Oregon. I suspect he was factor in the Oregon move to the Big 10.

Distance isn't a problem, never has been. Colorado, Utah, AZ, ASU, UCLA, USC those are not that difficult. Actually, WSU was always one of the tougher games for travel. It's just not easy getting to Pulman.

Before I retired I use to do PDX to Newark in the afternoon, then do a 9AM, 11AM, 1 PM and 3 PM meeting in Manhattan and catch a 6 PM flight back to PDX. This travel thing is way over blown.

Also, distance hasn't been a problem in the past for recruiting, it's no different today than yesterday when recruiting. Being a member of the B1G will actually make Oregon more attractive to high profile recruits.

I doubt the picture is real. Probably like the one with him and a pile of cash. But it is true that he hit the portal hard and I'm sure that did cost. Lanning could win the B1G this year. In fact, I predict they will. Most of the B1G isn't built to stop an offensive onslaught.

Will it work? Probably for a one hit wonder. Possibly get you to the natty... but it's not sustainable and it will be changed.

Sure we can keep up as long as we're dominant in the trenches. Truth is, even as selective and precise as we are in recruiting, you are going to have busts. It still comes down to the Jimmy and joes. There's also a lot of difference in an 18 yo vs a 22 yo. So if we keep our "dudes " to stick around, we'll end up with a quality mix to compete and possibly win a natty.

Long term we'll probably be better off. But we will probably have more years like this past season until mixed in. Jmho.

Good assessment. I think one of the best arguments is 18 year olds vs 22 year olds. There is a huge difference and the only way we compete is to hold on to our guys. Even guys like Beaux Collins. I didn’t think he was great but he could have been like Cornell Powell, below average his entire career and then a superstar his senior year.

2. Do I think it will work? Depends on definition of “work”. Will they remain a perennial CFP invitational? Yes. So basically they stay where they have been previously.

Do I think it will guarantee an MNC in the CFP invitational? No. Nothing like that is guaranteed no matter how much you spend.

4. Can we keep up? Once again “keep up” needs to be defined and under what constraints. Can we make the CFP frequently while taking extremely limited transfers and focusing on the college experience offered as opposed to just the $$$ being offered?

Yes. We can still battle for top in the ACC in most years thereby making the CFP invitational. And once in a blue moon make a run.

I think things at the top will change year to year. Will be similar to NCAA basketball. A lot of turnover at the top like the UK and Duke and UNC, etc. But then you have those teams like Gonzaga that recruit just a notch below (for the most part) but are in the top mix each year.

We become like the Gonzaga’s.

My poop and my post are now finished.

We are in a period of transition.

Hopefully it will only last 2 or 3 more years. Then, there will be some sort of new college order. During this transition period, all the coaches are trying to do is survive and be ready to compete whenever some sort of order is restored.

Paying 13 million a year for the next decade or more is not sustainable. But, nobody will have to do that.

Having unlimited transfers with multiple portals a year is not sustainable. It will change in 2 or 3 years.

I don't know how it will all shake out, but I am convinced that one thing will be true whenever the new order is established: Academics will be even less important than they are today.

Just look around at all the hand-wringing and concerns and complaints by the coaches and the pundits in the media. How often do you hear anyone express any concern about the academic effects of the portal, NIL and realignment?

IMO, the way that the Portal has unrestricted open doors for as many times as a college athlete wants to go through, that has to change very soon for college FB to survive...

Question 4 is the most important. We will but not the way most think. We'll be different but it will work as long as Dabo is here. His recruiting might even get better.

These quotes make no sense to me. Why would Ryan Day, working to hold his roster together, basically tell anyone listening that Oregon is in a better situation. Or basically throw his own program under the bus claiming Michigan is a sinking ship as Ohio State has lost 3 in a row? I know Dabo’s famous rant came in year 3 of our skid against South Carolina, but that was a full throated defense of our school and history predicated on comments from Todd Ellis that were misattributed to Steve Spurrier. And he certainly didn’t declare that South Carolina was a “sinking ship” or mock the future of their program.

Finding the quotes very unlikely and uncredited I googled them. I have searched for both of them using “quotes” and with some minor variations. I find no evidence Day made the comments about Michigan being a sinking ship. And while I know he has supposedly informed a group of boosters that he needs $13 million - that was pretty stupid on his part. Coaches can’t be directly facilitating NIL transactions. He’s walking on the wrong side of a fine line speaking in such terms to such a large group - one that had at least one person eager to go immediately to the press and let Day’s comments be known.

The only reference to Oregon “building a monster” is a couple of low traffic sports blogs - one an Oregon fan site. In both, it was the author’s words - not attributed to anyone else.

To your questions

1) the closest an attributable quote has been made was the leak from his booster meeting where he said he “needs” $13 million. That number has been used for the claims for what has been spent to keep the roster together. But Day’s comment was made in 2022. The market has only gone up. So, I don’t believe it but I have no idea how much he’s really spent. On3 pegs Ohio States average NIL value at $100,000. That’s only $8.5 million if every single scholarship player was receiving an NIL deal. And I don’t believe for a second On3’s high end valuations. Sheduer Sanders is projected at $5 million yet his most high-profile, known endorsement is Smoothie King. And if Colorado boosters were really ready to throw that kind of money around why have they absolutely sucked for so long. They haven’t just failed to get over the hump - they have been absolutely terrible . They have 4 overall winning seasons in the last 20 years. Possibly the worst program in P5 football over that stretch. So no, I don’t really believe any school has spent $13 million on a single season of NIL endorsements.

2) no. It won’t work.

3) no. Oregon has been one of the best, most consistent programs in P5 football over the last 20 years. Easily a top 10 program over that spread. Easily the best over that spread without a National Championship and certainly a better overall program than many who did. They’re about to move into a more competitive conference being that is itself becoming more competitive with the addition of Oregon, Washington, and USC. How do they go from great to “monster”? They have to become a perennial CFP finalist. Unlikely.

4) yes

Think about every coach you've ever heard speak. No coach would so openly admit that they couldn't keep up or hold another program in higher regard than their own. If anything, they're usually a never ceasing fountain of positivity, even if their hope is unfounded.

I absolutely believe 13M if you think about the per person amount it’s not as big of a number as people think. You give a few skill players a million and adds up quick. A person I know specifically was offered 700000 to stay at UNC as a BACKUP quarterback a couple of years ago. He decided to leave anyways which makes you think he got more though the move was to be back in home state.

I think that the nil can make some one hit wonders but I do not think that it will lead to a dynasty on its own. Somebody that recruits well and nils well maybe. And I get that’s Ohio state. But coaching matters too and I don’t think days the guy to make that happen. Look at Jimbo Fisher. Can we keep up? Not with the nil but if it breaks then we may be better off in the long run if we are built on solid foundation.

I don’t see how the nil is sustainable. You’d like to think it’s business and people are paying these kids for commercial value maybe to sell more product or whatever. But how many commercials are you actually seeing and how many sales is it driving? To me it’s just a bunch of old rich people who want to buy a championship and feel better about themselves when they likely never played or haven’t played in 50 yrs or more. Point being no one is going to get anything out of their investment the way it is unless their investment is a championship.
