We’ve got to have better QB play to get back to elite status and a top 10 program. I think Cade is a serviceable player(similar to Kelly Bryant), but unless he makes tremendous improvements in all areas , I think we’re looking at 8 to 9 win seasons. Do y’all think Vizinna will get a serious look in the spring? Do we have any other prospects coming in? Should we think about a portal QB for depth and competition?

You and everyone else need to look back and cherish the memories of the seasons that Deshaun and Trevor had and realize it is very likely that we will never have players like that again. Yes, Cade needs to be better and if he can have some better running backs and receivers around him, he will be, but there is a reason Deshaun and Trevor were considered generational quarterbacks.

With a year under his belt I think that the new OC will help Cade improve during the off season. Lots of film to study in the next few months and an exciting spring to help make improvements. OL needs to improve also. March and April will be fun.

So Vizinna is a highly rated 5 star QB , and nobody wants to see what he can do??? Why was he recruited? I’m always amazed how with every other position on a football team guys are rotating and even the young guys get some meaningful snaps, but not with QB , no way. It’s like the coaches feel the sky will fall if a guy is given a series here and there.

Correct TURFMAN. This goes all the way back to the Stoudt/Morris days when the Bubble Gum Masher went way overboard trying to "protect" Stoudt and simplified the offense down to practically nothing. That idea of protecting a young QB is one I have never understood! If a QB is on your team and practices daily, then he should be ready to run the offense when called upon, with minor tweaks to fit his skills. This idea of protecting these little darlings so their feeling don't get hurt is something that came along way after my time in the saddle and I don't like it one bit. If you remember, Bubble Gummer moved on after the regular season and the consortium of Elliott/Scott turned Stoudt loose in the bowl game and he roasted OKLA and threw for about 300+ and a couple of scores.

Haven't read all the posts concerning this, but I haven't seen the word TRUST. Cade completes a few down field and we're passing all night long. Miss a couple and we're quick to lose faith. I say "we", but the staff really. But it's more than that. The QB has to earn the trust of the coaches and his fellow offensive players. With Trevor and Deshaun the players trusted them without question. The WR's back then would often comment that they could put the ball right where you wanted it. They were able to hit them in stride. Turn around the ball was there.
Cade is capable of that. Only not every time. Yet. I keep hearing Dabo vetoed any pass plays as Saturday nights game progressed. Complete lack of trust there. Which resulted in our limited (to be kind) offensive scheme. Mafah or Shipley run. Shipley screen. Cade on a keeper. With the occasional pass attempt. That's all we ran for around 3-1/2 quarters. Hard to believe the Coots really didn't have an answer for that. But they did keep us out of the endzone. Or maybe we did. Not pretty, but I'll take the W every time.

Valleyboy,
Then I guess the question becomes, just how good a team can we be without generational QBs ?
What are reasonable expectations for our program going forward ?
How many teams currently in the top 10 would you say have "generational" QBs ?

It's odd that your post reflects very little thankfulness. Perhaps your fav team only scored 7 points last Saturday?

While Cade is not DW4 or TL16 he's good enough to take us where we want to go.
We have NO gamebreaking WRs or a RB that can compliment the power style of Mafah and while you don't need an "ELITE" Oline if you have the right skill players they need to be formidable and I'm not sure they're that right now. Hence why we saw virtually no change in offensive output from the previous two years.

It sure would help if he had someone to throw to. Someone who can run a route, get open, and then actually catch the ball.

Everyone take the time to watch our last drive vs Alabama when we had Watson
There were like 5 passes.
.................3 of which were literally circus catches.
We had watched those types of receptions the entire season.
Super recievers are required in todays college football world.

had their stride broken. They were running wide open at near full speed yet failed to catch the ball. Had they caught the ball that would have added 50 or more yards to our offensive production. Scar's defense played to keep the ball in front of them and did well. Failure to take advantage with shorter passing routes was our primary problem.
Cade is a great quarterback who just got no help.

routes and see what percentage of QBs can hit a receiver who is running horizontally. Cade hit three in the ND game which changed ND's defensive strategy and opened up the middle of the field for our running game. GT and UNC showed us the same, or a twist of the same strategy.
Cade hit five of those routes and all were dropped by the receivers, that something that features our TEs. It was odd to see a TE drop miss a ball that hit them in the hands.
BTW, DJ never hit that route. The ball was either in front, high or behind our receiver. Many of them resulted in interceptions. Cade is another class of QB from DJ and the step up we needed to make the playoff next season.
