Injury update for FSU.

|
|
Note, I am not giving this report trying to find sympathy. If anyone knows about a slew of injuries it is Clemson fans. Giving it just for information and insight on this week's game.
We lost our best DL, a projected first round draft pick, in the first half of the opening game. He has not played since then and is not expected to be back for this game. (Norvell releases little information about injuries, but he has not practiced, even non-contact, since the injury. He is a DT.
Our 2nd and 3rd best DTs are both injured. The 2nd best was injured, but started the game and was injured in the game. The 3rd best DT was injured during the game.
As a result of our play at DT, most teams find success running the ball straight up the gut on us. NCSU has the ball for over 20 minutes in the second half. FSU knew they were going to run. When Leary got injured, the back up QB came in and only attempted 1 pass the rest of the game. But, they still gashed us with the run.
My expectation: Clemson game plan will be: 1. Run the ball up the gut. Shipley and Mafah between the tackles. 2. QB counter will be extremely effective. 3. When FSU commits a safety into the box, play action passes and just pure passes will be effective.
We have three good running backs. It is a case of RB by committee. All have different strengths. One of them was injured and had his arm in a sling. I don't expect him to be back.
Other than that, it is routine injuries that all teams suffer.
I'm listening to a radio talk show now. These guys are expecting Clemson to kill us between the tackles. Our defense is much improved. With a healthy DL we could be competitive. But, general consensus is the best chance for FSU to win is to win in a shootout. "First team to 40 wins." Jordan Travis and the WRs will have to play a lot better for that to happen.

I expect a tough, close game. On paper, I think we should win but as they say, "that's why we play the game."

Brett it’s unclear from your post if all 3 DTs were injured in the first game or if the 2nd and 3rd best DTS were just injured against NC State? Hopefully Doreen wasn’t targeting them.

What are you talking about Brett? Jarred Varse the very good transfer from Albany is expected to play Saturday?

Our OL is vastly improved over last year.
BUT
Our best OL, left tackle Robert Scott, was injured before the season. He played some against NCSU (first action of the year I think) but is less than 100%.
We lost another tackle early in the year. We have moved our starting center to tackle. (He's the guy with the stupid penalty late in the game that turned a 3rd and 2 into a 3rd and 17. He is our best OL.)
We have no depth at tackle now. The two starters are adequate at best, but when they come off the field there is a real drop off.

Always have admired your take on all things FSU Bret. It will still be a competitive game. It rumor holds true that our defense is 100% it could be a long night for Travis and Co.

Ward is the guy who is injured, probably out. Most folks say he is the most talented, but there is no big dropoff with the other two. All three have different strengths.

Well, Vegas must know something.....despite all these injuries, the line has gone from 8.5 to 4.5 on the game. That's a pretty significant drop in one day. FSU fans that confident and betting money? At this rate, we will be underdogs by Saturday.

Human Nature.
Oct 10, 2022, 6:11 PM
|
|
Regardless of how much you say: "it's the biggest game because it's the next game"! Or,"we respect all opponents the same"!
Or, "we treat it like any other game"!
Its human nature to look down the schedule and know who you have this week(someone you should blow out) and who you have next(someone you could lose to). The focus on each will be different "as a whole" typically! Leaders and seniors will play every game like it's their last. But, will everyone. The game you don't have to motivate them for or hype them up for is the one where "your back is against the wall and you could lose"!
Fact is: "you could lose either game, but the perception of the opponents is key"! LSU was beaten by this team and LSU has a good football team. FSU beat them in Louisiana - FSU is a good football team that will get the Tiger's full attention.

FSU has talent all over the place this season. This is going to be the toughest game we’ve had against FSU since 2014.
Buckle up buttercups!
Tigernet will be crazy Saturday night!
Overtime game possible if we play well enough! No rat poison please.
FSU is desperate after two close loses to great teams.
I wish this game was played in the real Death Valley!

Been hurt. Should be close to full strength Saturday. He's the most recognized and lauded DL, but true Nole fans will tell you the loss of Lovett, DT, is the biggest loss.

Brett is always a straight shooter and handles himself well with some of the stupid insults some of you throw his way. This is without a doubt the best FSU team in years. With the nighttime atmosphere and Clemson coming to town this will be the toughest game left on Clemsons schedule even counting ND. Our offense will have to play well and score points as FSU will get their points. This is one of the better offensive schemes you will see. Batten down the hatches as this will be a barn burner.

I'm just going to be honest here..

I don't think we've blown up anyone's DL, and FSU has better players on 2nd string than most of the 1st string players we've played against.
Frankly, we have a ways to go in run blocking. I don't think we'll be able to smashmouth FSU.
Going to need an accurate and efficient DJ, and he's going to need at least 50 yards on the ground too. I think FSU will pressure DJ more than any team we've played so far, but he's gotta remain cool and calm.

Bret- you have seen our oline play. I am not confident that we can consistently run on Daniel High School.
Our run blocking is very average which is a bummer given the backs we have. Now pass pro is a different story. So I am not sure FSU can get the pressure needed to disrupt DJ and the passing game.
