Is it possible that Dabo’s concern is Cade starting a game

Nov 28, 2022, 8:19 AM

and just lighting it up and an offensive explosion ensues? Then he would have to defend sticking with DJ all year.

I kid, but sometimes you have to wonder with DJ’s poor play.

Of course. Limit his play and limit the questions on why he isn’t starting. Leaders don’t need coddling to protect their psychic .. you either are or you’re not. Hopefully only two more games of the smoke and mirrors, and best man starts reenters the mix.

It's possible, but I don't think likely to be completely honest.

Here's why; if what you suggest is the case then we'll see it next year (assuming DJ leaves), the offense will take off and we'll look back at these past two years and say 'what was with sticking with DJ if you had this guy'?
So the questions/criticism will remain.

I think it's more likely that Dabo sees us as just a smidge away from being great (rightly or wrongly) and to use an analogy he used when he got the job, we just need and oil change and not an engine rebuild.

I'm not convinced that it's JUST DJ that's the issue. I think it's a combo of stale scheme, inexperienced OC, WR play/talent drop off AND really poor QB play. So I'm of the 'engine rebuild' camp, at least on that side of the ball.

But I don't think he's sticking with DJ JUST out of some sort of stubborn pride, though there's likely a component of that there.

I agree

I think Dabo truly 100% believes he has all the pieces in place that will produce championship football if it all comes together. The he see’s the potential and knows if everyone hits on all cylinders it will be great. The frustrating thing to fans is that it seems like for whatever reason that one part is missing to bring it all together. You can only bang a square peg in a round hole so much before you say it doesn’t work and that is what our offense has been the last two seasons but Dabo’s conviction is so strong we won’t give up.

Well last year, he didn't have a choice...

Nov 28, 2022, 9:56 AM [ in reply to Re: Is it possible that Dabo’s concern is Cade starting a game ]

Since we didn't have a viable backup, he had to stick with DJ. But that's a whole different issue to blame Dabo for.

It could be that he's a afraid to play Cade. because it will further expose the inefficiencies of his staff. We're going into game 13, if Cade isn't ready to play now he never will be. Beyond the X's and O's, player development on both sides of the ball leaves a lot to be desired and roster management is pathetic.

I agree with you, we're at the engine rebuild stage. This staff needs a severe overhaul. The problem is I don't see that happening until the issues start impacting the bottom line.

Agreed. I think DJ is carrying a lot of the frustration for the lack of offensive productivity this season. I think it's a combo of things that have led to where things are right now. This team was close, real close, to being in the playoff. Dabo has to believe DJ gives us the best chance all things considered. I don't think his ego, etc. is such that would allow him to sit a QB that would be the difference in 12-0 v 10-2.

Let's be real, it is a good problem to have that we are this pissed about a 10-2 regular season.

Nov 28, 2022, 10:11 AM

Is it though??? What is 10-2 with a potential ACC championship going to help with offensive recruits who see one of the worst offenses in all of CFB??? The recruits aren’t dumb they want to play in an offense that’s exciting, if we don’t land a RB this cycle it will be our second straight. Besides Noble who’s going to be a beast we haven’t landed any other TOP wr, although I’ve seen Tyler Brown play and believe he’s way underrated. It’s not the record that is frustrating it’s that the offense hasn’t evolved with the times, recruiting isn’t the same as it was in 2015 and neither are the kids.

So is there an opinion that Cade could possibly play worse than DJ did Saturday. I truely hope that there aren't people that believe that. And if Dabo thinks that then we as Clemson fans and alumni have a huge issue. I think Cade's mobility alone gives us a much higher percentage of moving the ball.

That’s what’s mind blowing, at the very least Cade wins the game with his legs because DJs arm wasn’t doing it. That first one of the game Cade takes to the house with his speed. DJ is a physical runner but Cade can get to the edge.

No, I don't think it's that Cade can't play worse.
Rather that people aren't legos, you can't just replace one with another and not have after effects.
And DJ has, by all accounts, done everything they've asked and is loved by the team.

So the situation is likely more one of, we're so close with DJ that if everyone just got a LITTLE better we would be fine and Cade likely isn't SO much better so that if you replace DJ with Cade you're worried you might lose the team.
When the switch from Kelly to Lawrence was made... TL was just so obviously better than it became a non-issue (save for some race baiting ESPN types).

I'm not sure Cade is THAT MUCH better at this point. But it's difficult to tell because they haven't put him in position to succeed this year.

You never know but I'd think its far more likely Cade is really bad than it is that he's really good and the coaches just prefer looking like idiots.

I just don't buy that. My worry is that Dabo and Streeter actually think DJ is good. But I actually think there's something else that's not being told. Must be a video somewhere.

I believe I heard Dabo say he and DJ have a deal in place. If so, would explain a lot.

There is something going on, you are right about that. Dabo is no dummy, yet is doing dumb things. He has a blind spot for some reason. Problem is, we may never know the real reason behind this insanity.
