and any decision our government makes or action it takes must always be to the best possible benefit of U.S. citizens. All other considerations are secondary.

There is absolutely nothing racist or xenophobic about that.

There is also absolutely nothing racist or xenophobic about feeling patriotic about the USA and realizing that we live in a unique country founded on timeless principles which have made us the greatest country in the world. We're not perfect, and we've made some terrible, tragic mistakes as a country, but we're on a solid foundation if we honor the constitution and respect the principles that underpin it.

Some people are too ignorant of world history to understand the ideals of the founding of our country not only created a higher degree of individual freedom for us but also for much of the world. We have individual rights enshrined in our foundational legal document. This is pretty unique.

That depends, Bill. When do you think the last time America was great was?

He will say that things were great before America elected LBJ and passed the Civil Rights Act vs keeping things "status quo" with Goldwater. He thinks it's been all downhill since then.

the transformation and the progress, which has been undeniably tremendous, and something we should be very proud of as Americans. We can do that while still acknowledging and properly understanding the horrific injustices that were part of our country's history. Neither one of these truths has to be ignored, silenced, or relegated to any kind of lesser status. All of this has to be kept in the proper, balanced perspective, but the focus has to be on moving forward and treating each other the right way now, without preconceived bias and assumptions. But, people who shape and control the message have either a very narrow perspective out of ignorance, or in many cases, due to self-serving reasons that ignore the greater good and real solutions.

Being old school, I still believe in the original goal of a colorblind society. That doesn't mean that race and skin color is ignored, as if it plays no role in our society; it means that we see people as unique individuals, where nobody gets points or deductions, and we don't make assumptions based on race or skin color. That's what I was taught when black kids were first integrated into my elementary school; acceptance, we are all the same. The goal is unity, where we all live together in peace, harmony, and mutual respect, seeing each other first and foremost as human beings who have so much in common. When our first reaction to other people is "what groups and sub-groups do THEY belong to? I have to treat them accordingly.", we are going backwards, and have lost before we got started.

I'm hugely proud of the Civil Rights movement. Beyond race, it was a group of people in this country that were getting the shaft. They were tired of the BS. They stood up, and we are a better country for it.

Exactly. I am seeing the Native Americans being slowly eliminated from our society and all references trying to be removed. Even a 9 year old with Native American heritage being attacked for wearing a headdress and face paint at an NFL game. These were the first people of America.

Alot of the America First noise is from people who want fewer black/brown people in this country. So, there's a racist aspect to it for sure.

country. Sure, they exist, and they are a problem. They just aren't even remotely representative of people who are openly patriotic, conservatives, Republicans, Christians, or even Trump voters. Chanting "America First" or believing that our government should put Americans first is in no way racist or xenophobic. Trying to conflate the two, even loosely, is no different than saying that black people are lazy thugs. It's an inaccurate, lazy stereotype.
