Academic

In y’all’s opinion, is a Ph. D worth going for? Totally irrelevant to sports, but just wanted to know what y’all thought. Time varies, but it can take up to 12 years of school after college to get.

It depends on what are wanting to do with it

I highly recommend it for anyone going into academia. Being in higher education, I have seen first-hand that a Ph.D. makes a significant difference in job prospects, compensation, and particularly in job security. Academic faculty without a Ph.D. are particularly vulnerable to budget cuts.

For someone who wants a Ph.D. just for business, it would not seem as important outside of conducting research.

It all comes back to the specific purpose for getting a Ph.D.

Clemson: Academic Excellence! Athletic Excellence!

I agree. This is no knock on those who pursue Ph.D.'s, as I would have done it had I had the patience and money. Over my career, it seems that experience and a willingness to learn surpasses any academic degree unless you're actually in academics. I think Ph.D's sometimes get pigeon-holed as being subject matter experts...typecast, if you will.

Two, with the cost of tuition these days, one has to wonder whether it's actually worth it to continue towards an advanced degree, if any degree at all. I have friends and coworkers with kids just out of college with BA's and BS's in worthless degrees that are saddled with incredible debt. One can't exactly afford a mortgage payment and a car payment when your student loan payments are $2000 a month.

Agreed

I stopped with a Master's degree in Public Administration from Clemson after undergraduate degrees from two other schools.

I was a career firefighter/paramedic and the grad degree cinched the best position I ever had. Battalion Chief at Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue.

A PhD wouldn't have helped me at all.

In academia, PhDs are by far the way to go.
Ditto for medical research, some business research, and advanced engineering like aerospace.

And what are your long-term goals?

Biology, and long term goals have been to be a doctor before, but after thinking it could take until my mid 30s. Interested in sports medicine and maybe getting involved in athletic programs as a part of medical teams.

Won’t a Ph.D. require almost as much school as an M.D.?

If you want to go to medical school, you should do that.

Even though it’s a little longer in school, you’ll quickly make that back in the additional income you’ll make.

Just my $0.02.

Wrong board. You clearly are not qualified for a PhD.

I squeaked out my BS but no doors were open for me until later in life when my major meant something to my new employer.
