It has now been 11 years since 9/11/2001

Sep 11, 2012, 7:43 AM

...and we have not had a successful attack on US soil in that time. For those of you that are wondering why the heck we are here in Afghanistan, think about that.

There are a lot of Afghan locals that wish this war was being fought somewhere else.

where I was and what I was doing when we found out what was going on. We turned on the tv and watched the second plane hit. Such a horrible day.

I've been wrong two times, but this isn't one of them.

I pray we never see anything like the 9/11 attacks, but...

Sep 11, 2012, 8:54 AM

we have to accept that the post 9/11 world exposes us to terror from a whole different source. In the 11 years since 9/11 19 people have been killed in the US from non-jihadists while 17 have been killed by terrorists aligned with Jihadist groups. We need to acknowledge that extreme political ideologies, either from abroad or from right here in America are dangerous.

That article is ridiculous

Sep 11, 2012, 9:11 AM

Are they really trying to downplay Jihadist radical muslims as the biggest threat?

Since 9-11, there have been 17 people killed by Jihadists and 19 by EVERY OTHER CAUSE KNOWN TO MAN. So nearly 50% of deaths are represented by ONE cause. Therefore Jihadists are the most dangerous to our national security. The data in this article proves this not disproves it. Now, sure, Jihadists are not the only source of concern, but they are the biggest source and need the most attention.

Carry on.

The opinion piece talks about not being distracted by the threat of Jihad - to remain focused on national security and the increasing threat of homegrown terrorism. If you spend all of your time chasing down turban-wearing folks, you're going to miss the Timothy McVeighs of this country.

It had been 200 years since we had been attacked

Sep 11, 2012, 8:55 AM

on our mainland (not counting Hawaii). Think about all the innocent children we have murdered and trillions of dollars spent to kill a handful of crazy people who can barely afford to feed their families and whose holy land we occupy.

Sep 11, 2012, 9:07 AM

1. Trillions were spent on the stimulus, not the war.
2. How many "innocent children" would have died had we stayed at home? Personally, I would rather my guys say which "innocent children" we unintentionally kill due to the effects of taking out a target than to allow our enemies to have free range to kill anyone they want.
3. Since you are quick to judge, in what way do you serve your country?

There is NO DOUBT that your presence there has saved

countless lives there and elsewhere.

I appreciate you friend, you are fighting the good fight. And you're a better person than me - I don't know that I would be able to do what you do.

Clemson, and I d@mn well appreciate your service! Maybe it was that ole Infantry/Airborne kick-a$$ attitude in me, but when those planes hit, my first reaction was to nuke the SOB's back into the stone age leaving the remainder to shovelling camel dung. They attacked our country, and to this day I have no use for the b@stards, so I applaud your efforts and firmly believe that your mission has helped deter further attacks on the U.S.

this "handful" you speak of seems very small compared to the "innocent children." If you would like the true numbers, let me know. I see them everyday.
The word "handful" could not be further away from the truth.

Whose "holy land" do we occupy?

Sep 11, 2012, 9:56 AM [ in reply to It had been 200 years since we had been attacked ]

Last I checked, there weren't any US troops in Mecca.

But you wouldn't want any facts to get in the way of your stupid little rant.

Hawaii was not part of the US when it was attacked.

However, since the 9-11 attacks, radical islamic groups have successufully executed over 50 major attacks all over the world (only 1 being in the US). In addition, the USA has successfully stopped 16 plots on the US. There is a reason we are not attacked on our soil...our military. No one like war and unfortunately some pay the ultimate price, even the innocent. But it is a price most are willing to pay so our children / grand children can enjoy the same freedom we sometimes take for granted.

There are no such thing as "innocent children and civilians" in The Middle East or Africa. Have you never seen Black Hawk Down?

To HELL with this political argument!! Whether you support this war or not is irrelevant. Our men and women overseas are risking their lives and we should honor and support THEM no matter how you think about the cause! I have a friend (a beautiful young lady) who just got there. I have a brother-in-law who is going over in the next couple of weeks as a Medevac helicopter pilot. I have a friend who still has nightmares because a convoy he was in charge of was attacked in his last week there and he lost three soldiers, and(rightly or wrongly, I suspect wrongly) blames himself. I will pray for them every night and bless them for the job they do or did. I think on this day, especially, we should forget our politics and honor them, PERIOD.
