I was under one at one point in my career, but it didn’t stop me from any competing actions.

I have a 1 year 100 mile radius noncompete with a $100,000 penalty/buy out. Getting rid of NC clauses would be very useful as a renegotiation tactic in my line of work.

When I leave?

Seriously non compete’s were not a big thing in my field unless working for engineering or consulting firms.

I've had one in every job I've had. They seem pretty standard for our industry. They do not prohibit from working for a competitor, but we can't solicit the firm's clients or take employees. They all have been for a period of 2 years after you leave.

Gastonia Pharmaceutical and Motorcycle Club LLC say that their non-compete clause is totally unbreakable.

I think you can get out of those, but the penalty is fairly stiff... decapitation.

I worked for a company that rolled out a non-compete for all employees

They did it in a really sneaky way, holding individual meetings with people so that they wouldn't have to address a group all at once. And then in that meeting, they pressured people to sign on the spot in the name of solidarity.

The non-compete had no specified time frame, or geographic location, nor did it specifically list the competitors that they had in mind. It was as open ended as they could possibly make it.

I didn't sign, and instead I took it to a lawyer to review. They said that while most judges would not enforce such an open-ended agreement,l--with the idea of protecting an employee's right to work--it was risky and could have just as easily been held up if taken to court.

This was a shop of about 30 employees, and after receiving that news, I walked... along with 8 or 9 others who would've been heavily impacted.

That company was led by a bunch of idiots who thought a forced non-compete would make their employees more loyal to them. Instead, it broke any kind of trust that we had and #### near broke the company.
