It’s impossible to keep good players as backups with the transfer portal

It’s just not rational and it’s no one’s faults. These kids want to play and they try to come to Clemson. Someone better beats them out and there are a lot of places that doesn’t have as good of players. I don’t view this as a negative thing when you have 4 and 5 stars transferring from your program. As many posters have said, you never have starters transfer. It’s the backups that know they can likely be starters at other programs. Why wouldn’t they transfer?

Good point. That makes it even more important that we beat the mess out of our opponents (like we did with Deshawn and Trevor) so everyone gets playing time!

I think it's good for parity

We might already be seeing it this year with a lack of truly dominant teams at the top. It's harder for schools like Alabama to stockpile 5-stars when the guys who don't start, or make the 2-deep or whatever, can go somewhere else where their services are more in demand without having to waste a year of their lives sitting out.

Bear Bryant couldn’t win these days. He regularly recruited kids that he knew would never play, just to keep them from going to Auburn… What this might eventually do is make the ballers that don’t fit the mold become more valuable. How many times have we struggled with entire teams that we “out star”, much less the baller QBs that are too short, slow or can’t throw 60 yard dimes? Part of this is due to the all or nothing mentality of building one’s brand exclusive of your teammates, yet profiting from your teammate’s work if the team wins a NC. College football has always had stars, but the stakes are so high now that the team is at best, second. So if we fish exclusively in the 4/5 star pond, the turnover will be high. Maybe after some of the coach’s kids move along, we can chase some 3 stars that will stick around and put team first.

Well you never hear anyone complaining about Saban pulling kid's scholarships or running kids off who are busts to make room for the next class of recruits anymore. You also hardly hear anyone complaining about Dabo refusing to get rid of anyone who doesn't work out.
Now everyone is worried about keeping 85, or fussing about too many walk-ons, or giving walk-ons scholarships to keep enough kids to practice. It is now self cleansing. Class limits are gone, and roster management is the topic. Everyone is just worried about trying to recruit enough kids, whether from high school or the portal.
It has to help parity, but the ones who can recruit are always going to have an advantage.

What's crazy about it is. It's more of a society thing. Every kid can't get a trophy all the time. Everybody can't be the boss. Everybody can't be the leader. But, if a kid is 2nd or 3rd string in today's "instant gratification society" they are wronged.
Did Michael Jordan quit after being cut? No. He worked his tail off and got so good he could not be ignored and billions of dollars and 6 championships and thousands of acolades later - he's considered the best by some.
We are letting them down in my opinion. The NCAA was far too strict on transfers i.m.o; but this is a complete 180 of where it was. There was a happy medium that could have prevented this; but the ball was dropped.
The genie is out the bottle now; so doubt we can get it back! But, I can assess blame 100% The NCAA.
Those Presidents and Chancellors and AD's are also to blame.

Dabo is going to have to use the Portal or we become irrelevant. You can't lose upcoming Sophomores, Juniors, seniors and replace them with recruiting HS athletes. Idealist Dabo better quickly become Realist Dabo.
