If they beat Clemson at the Chicken Coop in 2023 then the investment will be well worth it (and it's likely much less than the 5 million he wanted). 31-30 at the Valley was based on Rattler's 360 yards passing along with the the 2 picks and 2 TD's. DJ had 99 yards. DJ makes NIL money so Rattler certainly has some value with back to back wins over top 10 teams. Really was hoping he would go. Have seen enough to last me for quite some time. Luke Doty was going to present a lot fewer issues.

Wonder what the average salary for a backup QB

5 million would be more than he would get for 5 years in the NFL given that he is likely no better than a 4-5th round pick.

It’s ridiculous & huge risk for S.Car: see B.Armstrong - UVA

Jan 10, 2023, 8:47 PM [ in reply to It's ridiculous and disgusting.*** ]

It is also a huge risk for S.Carolina.

They have lost some key players on offense to graduation (no surprise there … that ‘s part of it) and surprise portal exits.

No one should pretend that S.Carolina’s other key contributors are not jealous, as well as disappointed that Shave Beaver wouldn’t cough up big time NIL cash for them.

As we’ve witnessed with Brennan Armstrong (recently departed UVA QB who portalled his way to NC State), outstanding QBs like who B.Armstrong was during UVA’s fine (offense) performance of 2021 need a supporting cast to thrive. UVA lost their supporting cast for 2022 season (including their entire OL), and B.Armstrong was running for his life and throwing bunches of pigs during a resoundingly unsuccessful 2022 season.

Rattler is staring down the barrel of a season like what Brennan Armstrong had in 2022.

$5mm isn’t going to fix his supporting cast problem.

No, not as a rookie. He'd be making maybe $1M a year for his first 4-5 years, if he lasted that long.

Re: Hearing coots paid Rattler 5 million to come back

He got what the market will bear for a player of his ability. A million sounds about right if he can beat 2 top ten teams with portal garbage teammates. If he beats Clemson a second time he should have a large bonus in the contract - just like the coaches have for their different levels of achievement. I'll go out on a limb and say Gamecock fans would be quite happy with a losing season if they can stick it to Clemson the final game. TBH as a longtime Clemson fan that's the one that matters to me since I have to live around it 24/7. So, Dabo's 8-6. You would think that for 11.5 million per year against the worm pullers and their history of failure he would have a better record but the numbers don't lie. Already preparing for a dogfight in November.

Re: Hearing coots paid Rattler 5 million to come back

Jan 10, 2023, 9:54 PM

Yeah, I can see $1m. It’s been estimated that he’s already making $2m. That sounds outrageous to me.

Portal garbage teammates?? Like who? Our transfers were very good.

Agree 100%. If we’re not going to win the NC or the sec, then I’m good with a W against Clem regardless of the rest of the season! Haha.

I think this year will be interesting for your D. Everyone is focusing on the O. But A LOT of talent walked out that door on D. And there’s no BV to coach up the replacements.

Re: Hearing coots paid Rattler 5 million to come back

Jan 10, 2023, 11:46 PM [ in reply to Re: Hearing coots paid Rattler 5 million to come back ]

NIL "deals" are not NFL contracts. Lol

It's booster money funneled to players via collectives with sham "work" in exchange for the payment. He didn't sign a multi million contract with bonuses.

I'm guessing whatever they offered, was more than a late round NFL base salary. He must think he can improve on 2022 and move up in the draft. Otherwise coming back would be a bad move since he finished the year on fire, tbh.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Hearing coots paid Rattler 5 million to come back

Jan 11, 2023, 8:32 AM

Yeah, the NIL deals can't be made on performance. I'm sure people are being creative about it though.

He's going to have to limit the INTs if wants to have a legit option in the NFL. That's the bottom line. The UT game showed his potential. NFL level throws all over the place in that game. And didn't really make any bad decisions. But it was only one game. Multiple bad decisions in the Clem game, and the bowl.

I've been very clear on here about his performance. The only way paying him this much makes sense is on his potential. His ceiling is sky high. Can he reach it is the question.

Re: Hearing coots paid Rattler 5 million to come back

Should have gotten?? Honest question. How much are you going to give:

1. A TE/WR that doesn't run good routes, has average hands, forgets plays, and can't block that had 231 yards and 2 TDs?

2. An edge that has 4.5 sacks in 3 years, is notorious for loafs, cannot set the edge, and gets eaten alive in run support?

Lloyd didn't give us a chance to do anything, although I'm certain there would have been efforts to get him more if he had spoken to our staff about it.

Guys that performed got taken care of. Appreciate the concern, but we good.

We didn’t lose as much on D as you think. I really like those who chose to stay. First year with new coordinators can be tough so I think we will see improvement on the Defensive side of the ball. Now offense, I do worry with Streeter. Point being, if we continued to run the ball, we beat you soundly.
