It's 2023. Why continue using this word?

It's childish.
And shouldn't be used in any context.
And then the board clown comes along talking about "did he mean tweet?"
Keep in mind, both of the above posters are liberals. Remember, we don't mind calling out Republicans for their foul behavior. Where are you fellow liberals?

He's saying, respectfully, it's a word we should try to avoid using.
If you're of the opinion that we should not be dbags and intentionally misgender people when they respectfully ask us to use the pronouns they prefer, this is just the same.

Somehow I don’t see misgendering the linebacker in a dress the same as disparaging the sweet kids with Downs Syndrome.

Yeah, I guess it's impossible for trans kids to be "sweet" and worthy of the same respect.
Silly me.

a special needs child, and don't realize how hurtful of a term it is when used as an adjective/pejorative for someone or something they find stupid. When you've watched your child struggle with everything they do, every day of their life, and seen them miss out on normal childhood activities, it makes a difference.
I readily admit to using that term as an adjective until my son was born. When it dawned on me that it was a terrible thing to say, I stopped. And I try to educate people that say it in my presence on why it's offensive to me. 99.9% of the time, they apologize, realize where I'm coming from and haven't repeated it around me.
I don't try to educate people on TNET because they clearly don't want to stop saying it, and I'm not wasting my time or energy on someone that I can easily just ignore. I will just think less of them and move on.

I will stop saying it. I was clearly not referring to actually disabled people nor would I ever in that context.

whether you're referring to a disabled person or not, using it as an adjective for something you find stupid, when we ALL know the roots of that term (when used as slang), is distasteful.
But regardless, I for one, thank you for recognizing why people could be offended by that.

^^this.
I have a special needs child and more than once, he has come home from school hurt because some kid called him a ######.
And where did that kid learn it from? More than likely his parents.
It's just one of those words that shouldn't be used In any context.

What exactly do you think happens when the "flag gang"

RA's a post?
If there are 5, the post is moved to quarantine, and that's it.
The RA'd post is then flagged for a moderator to pass judgement, there's no sway by any flagger.
I have been issued warnings and banned too, there's nothing political or "brigade" about the flagging system...

"I'm sure the flag brigade will be right on it." <-- what is your point of this statement?
And what post should anybody be RA'ing? I RA all posts with the OP's word, same with "libtard".

My point is that post will not get enough flags to be quarantined because the group that does most of the flagging will not flag the post about hoping someone dies in their sleep to make the world a better place. Not sure if it gets worse than saying something like that. This will be a good test.

Also, all it takes is a single RA for a mod to look at it, I genuinely don't understand what you don't get about this. You know that you're allowed to press that button, right?

I must have missed where Bmeist gave us a breakdown of who throws flags.
This sort of feels like a 'doth protest too much' post.

It seems okay to me, as long as it's not used on someone like your child. Kind of like calling someone a ###, but the person isn't gay.

it and find another word instead, to still make your point or joke because the ROI on using the word hardly seems to justify the pain it could cause someone else hearing it, when fine alternatives to it exist.

It's out of line. It is highly insensitive to throw it around casually in front of people who may have special needs children or family.

Same goes for "tranny" that I keep seeing used in discussions about transgender people. It shouldn't be used and it's pretty clear that those that use it don't know anyone who is transgender (or aren't close to anyone that is).

Banning words doesn't seem very liberal to me. That being said, certain speech is in poor taste, but what that is, is my opinion.

just surprised considering what words are censored on here, they aren't censored. I don't think they should be used, but that's not the same as saying they should be banned. Hopefully those who aren't liberal still understand and appreciate that subtle difference.

and/or have emotional impacts that warrant not using them as an option when there are plenty of other words available that can get someone's point across without those concerns. I'd never say no one can use a word, but there are clearly some words that I'd argue are, more times than not, probably best not used. Obvious example of an exception would be in academic situations where the word is the subject matter.
