In the old days it was on Jan 31st afternoon, sometimes 30th so as to not play on Sunday, and sometimes on the Saturday before New Year. I do not remember it being in Jan 1st.

I have two big screens outside my office that usually show KPIs. Today one of them will be showing the tigers. Cheers to productivity.
