Juicing.

Aug 18, 2015, 10:12 AM

Not steroids. But the drink stuff. I watched a documentary on this guy who drank juice for 90 days, some of you may have seen it called "fat, sick and nearly dead." Anyway I bought a juicer and I'm gonna try it. Not for 90 days straight or anywhere near that extreme. But I was curious if any of yall have done it and what kind of recipes yall used. Thanks.

I use it for breakfast a good bit or for a quick snack in place of junk food.

I usually throw the following in a blender: spinach (or some sort of juicing greens), pineapple, and a little Orange Juice or water (to reduce the thickness of the drink), 2 ice cubes (easier to drink chilled) and then some combination of Apples, Kiwi, Strawberries, Bananas, Blueberries, Rasberries, greek yogurt, etc. Blend it all up and drink it.

It's very nutritious and surprisingly filling. I've found Pineapples and Bananas are the best for covering up flavors of other foods that you may not like as much but want to add to your diet.

I haven't branched out too much from greens and fruits, as that was my main goal this year to add fruits and leafy veggies to my diet. I can tell a huge difference as I lost 23 lbs (I've gained a couple back, but leveled off around 18 lbs lost).

Nice. I made one a little bit ago with apples, spinach, oranges, lemon, carrots and cucumber. Not bad at all. I put half a lemon in there and it overrides most all the other flavors. Probably could cut the lemon down to a quarter. And it is surprisingly filling.

I watched that same documentary several years ago and bought a juicer and made juicing a big part of my diet. I never went to an exclusive all juice diet or anything, but I mostly cut out processed foods, sugary sodas, and all fast food. I ended up losing about 40 lbs in all and I have never felt better in my life. I am also wearing pants sizes that I had previously not seen since high school. The lost weight has eliminated my back pain, and I no longer feel my knees barking at me all the time. I don't have any particular recipes, but I always try to include leafy vegetables like kale, spinach, romaine lettuce etc. (don't ever juice mustard greens, I found them to be horrible as a juice) Some things that I particularly like include cantaloupe, carrots, apples, fennel, cucumbers, and grapefruits. Good luck with your juicing!!

That's awesome. I shall see how it goes. A half a day into it and it's great. Haha. Thanks everybody for sharing. Now if only I can motivate myself into waking up early and go jogging or something.

Got one 4 years ago...

As others have noted, the big change was drinking juice rather than sodas, snacking, etc. The combination of more nutrient and less junk really does make a difference.

And yes, I dropped 30 pounds, from 240 to 210, over about 6 months. Might have done the same by just dropping the junk food, but there had to be an impetus. Alas, got lazy and stopped ... so of course the weight came back.

I watched it with my wife, she was on a health kick at the time so we tried it. Just fruit was very good, add kale ok not great, put that ginger root in it, no way , that stuff is horrible. I eat right, work out when I can, juicing is not for me.

I use a blender (Vitamix) and make smoothies, they have a little more caloric content than juice but you get a ton of fiber so it probably evens out.

smoothies

Aug 18, 2015, 12:55 PM

For the past two years I've started my morning with a smoothie containing : 1 banana, frozen strawberries, frozen blueberries, frozen spinach, one carrot, plain yogurt, fresh ginger root, cayenne pepper, ground flax seed, Chia seed, and some oj.

I've never had weight issues but it has put my energy through the roof and i have only been sick once even when I was working at a ski resort where sickness runs rampant through the staff during the winter season. Plus when it's all said and done it's about the same cost or cheaper than hitting Mickey Ds in the morning.
