Junge iPhone question

Sep 13, 2012, 1:48 PM

I've somehow managed to stretch the iPhone 3G out for four years before hopping on Apple's "upgrade or die" bandwagon. Both the 4S and 5 will be significant upgrades from what I'm used to.

So the real question is whether or not getting the 5 with it's LTE capabilities is worth the $100 difference in price considering I'll have to buy all new cords, adapters, etc for the weak non-microUSB "Lightning" crap as opposed to saving $100 up front on the 4S to be able to use every accessory I've already got.

I'm looking at you applekrzy.

Thanks in advance for the sarcastic responses that won't help.

And you're welcome to everyone else.

You've had the 3 this long, why upgrade now?

But if you are going to upgrade, you may as well got the newest one. If not, you will be more likely to go to the 6 next year. If you get 5 now, you may be able to hold out for 7 or 8.

features on the new 5 are quite nice. But, seeing as how my company pays for my phone, I guess I'm at their mercy. So right now, they ain't buying squat. :(

If you do, Notre Dame will become a full member of the ACC and play all of their games against Clemson in Death Valley for the rest of humankind's reign on this mortal coil.

Couple things hinge on my answer.

Are you a Verizon or AT&T customer?

Do you still have your unlimited data plan?

If you are Verizon and still have unlimited, you cannot get the phone subsidized and keep your unlimited data. You would have to pay full price for the iPhone 5, I'm unsure if you can subsidize the 4S and keep your unlimited, but I believe you can. So in that scenario, 4S.

If you are on Verizon and do not have unlimited, I would get the iPhone 5. The LTE is a tremendous upgrade in speed and the remaining upgrades trump the 4S (even wins in battery life).

If you are on AT&T and still on your unlimited, then definitely get the iPhone 5, no question. That's what I have and I'm going to do it. AT&T is allowing you to subsidize and keep your unlimited data. AT&T's ghey policy of throttling at 3GB will bump to 5GB when you have an LTE device, so you're getting an extra 2GB of non-throttled data.

If you are on AT&T and not on unlimited, I'd say the same answer as Verizon and not on unlimited. Although, AT&T's LTE isn't up to the par that Verizon's is, so I would lean towards going with the 4S.

New cords will suck, but I'm thinking this cord design will be an Apple standard for a while. It is mirrored, so it doesn't matter which way you plug it in, has a higher bandwidth than the existing one, and should be here for a while.

droid razr maxx just before they got rid of the plan. Here's hoping that something changes in their plans again before I want to upgrade. If my bill stayed the same but I was limited to 5 or 6 gig, I'd be fine. Now that I'm keeping track, I'm seeing that 2 gig isn't good enough.
