Just thought I'd share a rumor with y'all.

Not sure where it started, probably some guy on twitter. But, one possible source is the guy on youtube who does Peek Around the Corner (PATC) a west coast based guy. I've tried listening to him, but a little bit goes a long way with me. I am in no way vouching for his accuracy.

Anyway the rumor is in two parts.
1. Very soon, Clemson will join with FSU in the suit against the ACC.
2. Sometime between 1/20 and 2/10 Clemson will announce their intention to leave the ACC.

I am only reporting this here because I'm sure some of y'all will eventually see it. While I would love for a few ACC schools to join with FSU in the lawsuit, I'm not sure it will happen this quickly. As I have heard it explained, "Lawsuits arrive on the back of a turtle."

And, I can see no reason for Clemson to announce they are intending to leave the conference now. They have until mid-August to make any announcement that will get them out at then end of the 2024 football season.

Thanks for posting Bret. ClemTig® posted about this earlier and provided the link. I went to minute 47 as instructed. I personally don’t put much credence into what the Peak Around guy is saying but ClemTig has some faith in the dude. Time will tell.

I used to listen to what Peek Around the Corner guy said last year when the Pac12 fell apart. His claim to fame is he knew about the USC to B1G like 6 months before it happened. He is from Minnesota or lives there. He got the USC info from a big time booster with Minnesota. As far as anything else I just don’t know how much he is connected. But maybe he is.

The irony that players have become free agents, but Clemson University is manacled to an inferior contract until 2036. I guess the dregs of the acc figure they get more out of the deal than they spend and don’t mind playing noon games.

Interesting point jackorange®. "The irony" you refer to may be a legal basis that the NCAA, conferences and networks have changed the underpinnings of college football by creating/approving NIL contracts and free agency. And come conferences and universities are (to use your word) "manacled" in an outdated payment distribution system that does permit equal or fair competition.

Well, just my first thoughts. But there's something there.

outcome. I'm guess that FSU leaving is going to bring a renegotiation between ACC and ESPiN for future TV rights. Clemson joining that rebellion might make the ACC a lost cause. If UNC and Clemson joined the suit the ACC's TV contract wouldn't buy a used car.

I'm not anxious to see Clemson make any announcement toward challenging the GoR but it would be a delight.

It can’t pure the contract. As long as the teams don’t drop below 14 ESPN is stuck paying what they are paying.

ESPN is only stuck until 2027. They still haven't exercised the extension on the contract past that.

Being that Phillips did not legally sign the amendment that gave ESPN the option to extend they probably don't have the option now to extend the current contract (2/3 vote is required and from what I read he just signed it without a vote). And I for one am ready for Clemson to get into the fight... fighting more battles might make the ACC more willing to negotiate. Fighting one lawsuit is expensive... fighting 3 or 4 might prove too costly for the ACC. Just a thought.

Excellent chance UNC joins as well. They have a choice between SEC/B1G.

Takeaway:

Clemson will be joining the lawsuit in a matter of weeks, and that Clemson has a landing spot in the big 2.

From the guy that predicted FSU’s suit to within 2 weeks of the actual filing date.

...it may happen. I still believe ESPN has made a bunch of empty financial promises they're not going to be able to deliver on. This past bowl season was dismal. Advertisers are simply not going to pay big bucks for the small audiences most of the games had and that's true of a lot of the regular season games as well. And cable is dying. Streaming is the future and streaming doesn't collect those "sports fees" that cable does. On top of that, ESPN/Disney are in financial straits and it will take years for them to recover (if they do).

I also don't believe FSU will be successful in their lawsuit. 16 schools, now 19, signed the GOR. The ACC has not dropped the ball so there are no performance issues. If the GOR is dissolved, that will basically mean all contracts are worthless and the impact of that kind of decision will be overwhelming. My opinion is no court will ever go down that path. Ultimately, this will end up in the SCOTUS and it could be years before it is resolved.

Clemson should just continue to play this as they currently are. Let FSU be the problem child. If the conferences decide to add, they're much more likely to look for a school that has not been a problem.

then form a new conference with the teams that bring the most value. The B1G, SEC, and BigXII have enough teams already, adding more just becomes silly.

Also, with a 12 team playoff the moves should be to go back to smaller conferences with more auto bids.

An 8 team conference formed from the bones of the ACC would NOT attract the big TV money needed to compete against the SEC, BIG, or Big12. Those teams would end up in the same financial deficit (or worse) that is prompting the troubles now.

But, I do not think the B1G or SEC want more charity cases. Most of the acc teams are on life support.

The legal lawsuit will move slowly, but if the a Big Five (FSU, Clemson, UNC, etc.) align against the ACC then that will increase pressure for the ACC (or ESPN) to find some kind of settlement.

FSU-like move, that we do have a big 2 spot. However, most all indications within the known realignment chatter have us down the list of candidates for both of the big 2.

Normally, I'd write-off such chatter, but it does make sense for SEC/ESPN, who seem in no hurry to add schools and ESPN is incented to keep the status quo. That leaves the BiG who seems to desire big-market, big research, AAU-like schools.

I, like you, feel that if we do make some FSU-like move in the near future we MUST have assurances that we have a big2 spot. I'm just not seeing that at the moment. Please tell me I'm wrong about that.

I think the main problem with a lot of the chatter is it's either from people who have a vested interest in the ACC staying together bc they work for ESPN, or they're basing their assumptions based on the parameters of what drove realignment nearly a decade ago, which is markets carriage fees, etc. With streaming and ESPN attempting to go to DTC, that is not the driving force anymore.

There's 3 big fish (Clemson, FSU, UNC), a medium fish (UVA) and then the rest of the ACC. The big and medium fish will essentially have their pick of where they want to go. I would envision the Big 10 wanting to bring all 4 to create a pod to pair with UMD. I don't think the AAU status is as big an issues as many make it out to be, especially considering it can be easily acquired if in the Big 10 and institutions like Oregon have retained it while having substandard academics. For ESPN/SEC, at the current moment, they have no incentive to bring in any ACC teams bc they're already locked them up for a fraction of the price, with what they believe to be an ironclad GOR and media contract. If those teams find a way out, all that goes out the window.

I think (and many others) believe Clemson will be fine in this round of realignment. I also don't think that you'll hear much from the SEC or B1G due to no one wanting to appear to be tampering.

"However, most all indications within the known realignment chatter have us down the list of candidates for both of the big 2."
- It's just chatter. Those in the know are not speaking.

"ESPN is incented to keep the status quo."
- Yes they are. Why pay $2 for something that you have a contract to buy for $1? But Fox sees potential in the brands of the ACC that ESPN controls on the cheap.

"That leaves the BiG who seems to desire big-market, big research, AAU-like schools."
- Those are the reported preferences of the B1G University Presidents. They aren't cutting the check, they don't get to select whomever they want. Otherwise they would have Stanford and Cal rather than Oregon and Washington. You see what happened there.

"we MUST have assurances that we have a big2 spot. I'm just not seeing that at the moment. Please tell me I'm wrong about that."
- You're not wrong. We are not seeing it at the moment because we aren't supposed to see it until they make the move. And there is no way we make the move without assurances.
