the marathon world record holder that tragically died in a car accident in Kenya Saturday at the age of 24.

His world record time set in the Chicago marathon last fall was 2:00:35. 26.2 miles in 2 hours which comes out to about 4:35 miles for 26 miles!

I've never enjoyed distance running, I don't watch distance running when its on TV during the Olympics and such, but I still find myself in awe of the fact that somebody could maintain a pace like that for 26 miles. I'm not sure there was any point in my life when I could run a single mile in under 5 min, and this guy could run 26 consecutive miles at 4:35 per clip. Truly amazing.

I don't see how any human being is capable of that. That's something I would expect from a few herds of antelope and that's about it.

ever be able to comprehend how extraordinary of a feat this is.

I was able to run close to that pace for 10k. To try and do it 4x, consecutive, seems 100% absurd even to me.

Tragic loss for those of us who enjoy track and field. No doubt the would have broken two hours in the marathon.
