Key to beating GT: Stay off the roller skates

Nov 10, 2014, 3:03 PM

GT is a strange team. Just how strange, people don't always appreciate until they play them.

The key to beating GT is: keep your head. Paul Johnson and the Bees thrive on situations where chaos reigns.

Their offense can look deceptively clunky, at times. Then they pull out some weirdness they haven't shown and hit you for a 50-yard play. Paul Johnson usually chains plays like this...like, it looks like a straight option pitch to the right, then the A-back pulls up off the pitch and tosses a ball across the field to a wide-open B-back who strolled into the far flat, and the guy goes rumbling up the field for a long gainer. Or the B-back looks like he's taking a straight dive, turns, pitches back to a WR coming on the reverse, catches everybody crashing into the A-gap. You see it all, with PJ. A lot of it looks thirty or fifty years old because it is, the kind of stuff you'd see Dodge Connelly pull out in Leatherheads...but everything old tends to be new again, when guys have never seen it before. And it's hard to prep for stuff when the last time anybody ran it they were wearing leather helmets.

All of which causes massive indecision on the part of a D - it's like, no fair, we did our film study, we executed all our assignments, and then he hits us with that? - and that's poison...because then the bread-and-butter stuff starts working again. In particular PJ is looking to spring the B-back on the dive or make the end indecisive, hence freeing up the QB/A-back keep-or-pitch, and when he gets a D flustered, stops executing assignment, all that stuff starts working again. So the key has to be: if Paul Johnson fools you, he fools you. Hats off to you, my man, for finding another gem in the dusty old archive. But the bread-and-butter of the triple option DOES NOT WORK because we're going to stick to our keys and execute our assignments.

Paul Johnson's going to get you, sometimes. But you cannot let him just start moving the chains at will because you're flustered and angry and not executing on basic assignments because he's gotten into your head. Get him behind the chains. Make Paul Johnson being the one calling from minus positions. Stuff the Bees in the backfield as often as possible. Absolutely bury the QB whenever he pitches until he just plain doesn't want to do it anymore and trust that your CB has gotten off his block and your linebackers have gotten through the wash, because you know they're going to have linemen firing out and diving at their knees, trying to spring that A-back around the edge.

Teams that beat the triple option, beat the triple option because they execute fundamentals and aren't fazed by the occasional big gainer. They don't get on roller skates. They keep their heads.

The second you lose your head against Paul Johnson, he owns you.

Defensively, it's kind of the opposite. The Bees' defense isn't built to prevent the opposition getting yards, or even points. They know they're not very athletic. They know they're not a great defense. So most of the time they play a lot of zone over the top, and are deceptively easy to move the ball against...but what they're looking for is turnovers. They're going to jump routes. They're going to show you different looks. They're going to take risks. Move the ball, they don't care. They're just trying to make you drive the length of the field...knowing that somewhere in there - especially if you're down - you're going to get impatient, or sloppy...and you will make a mistake. And that's when they pounce.

We saw that plain as day with NC State last week. It looked like NC State was doing fine...the game was 14-13, NC State was moving the ball at will...and then the roof fell in. Three turnovers in three minutes, one of them a pick-six, and all of a sudden it's 35-13 and NC State is well and truly frizzle-fried.

And that's exactly when Paul Johnson has you. At that point, he could have named his score.

Stop the bread and butter. Execute fundamentals. And avoid chaos. The Bees thrive on insane games. So don't get into one. If you understand that messing with your head is 90% of their game plan, and the main thing you have to do to beat the Bees is to just keep your head, it gets a lot simpler.

Stay off the roller skates. And the Tigers will go to 8-2.

stand up and stay on their feet rather than go down into three point stances. The blockers had a lot of trouble getting to them which seemed to work in our favor. GT got some yards and scored some points but the game was already over. Will be interesting if Venables has them do it again.

Outside contain. Keep everything to the middle.

Nov 10, 2014, 3:14 PM

When they were able to cut it to the outside against NCSU they busted some long gains. If we can force it to the middle we should limit long yardage plays. I have no reason to think our defense won't be able to do so.

Against ThUGA we failed to seal the edge later in the game and it really bit us. Now mind you we didn't have Crawford or Peters and I do believe we severely missed their presence. And IMO, Garry Peters has played lights out this year. We'll miss Robert Smith but I'm sure Coach V will have TJ Green ready to go.

Tigs win 31-17.

The last 3 times we've played, GT has scored 31. They won in 2011 31-17. We won with offense, scoring 47 and 55.

Nov 10, 2014, 3:31 PM

I think we scored 30+ on you guys every year since 2009, except for 2010. Your defense stuffed us that year, and early last year.

But the last two years, Clemson has ended up beating us by scoring on our weak defense. That's what I expect you to try again this year.

I admit, I'm not the smartest fella in the crowd but if GT's Offense is so illusive and potentially explosive why don we do it? It seems like we have difficulties with this triple option so, why not do it too?

Re: Key to beating GT: Stay off the roller skates

Nov 10, 2014, 3:42 PM

Great read. I heard one DC had his team practice against GT by running all types of variations, but never used the football. His thought was for the D players to hit their assigned players hard and on every play. You were not looking for the ball and getting tricked.

will have to be played. I remember the Wofford game, the year that we won the NC. We spent the first two quarter tackling the wrong
man while the ball carrier was boogieing down the field. We finally got it together in the 3rd quarter.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think it ever looks clunky. They are among the

highest scoring teams every week. They have scored 31 on us for three straight years. Fortunately, two of those years we were able to outscore them. We are not a scoring machine this year so I hope we hold them to a lower total.

Re: If Tech is effective in running the ball, we will not

get the ball that many times. It is important that we have no or few three and outs. I hope Watson is able to go.

Key to stopping GT is

Nov 10, 2014, 4:31 PM

to stop the dive with your front. To do this, they'll have to:

1. play with their hands

2. maintain their gaps.

As good as our DL is, they're gonna have to get their hands up and on the OL as they try to cut. Put them in the ground and keep your feet. If they can keep their feet, it allows our LBs to scrap over the top and play downhill on QB and pitch.

BV will also mix up the looks, using the corners and safeties in the run game.

A good read. An inspiring read. A read that comes from someone who clearly has watched a lot of Paul Johnson football.

Unfortunately not 2014 Paul Johnson football. Miami and Virginia were 2 teams that were quite solid on their assignments. It didn't matter. Our team is executing offensively like no other GT team has. Being assignment sound gets you the slow death instead of the quick death. If you want to shut it down via scheme I would look more toward Duke, especially in the RZ. They disguised their rushers and showed us multiple looks to muddy up the read. We kept trying to figure out which base play would be on and ended up with confusion and the wrong check-down. The other way to win, of course, is to shed blocks or push a blocker into a running lane forcing the play to go around. Create negative plays. This is probably where Clemson has quite a good shot of succeeding. It'll be a fun matchup. Strength vs. strength, no doubt.

Aggressive defenses will get shredded playing that type of offense! Players have to trust what their coach says and don't believe their eyes. If a play looks like it's going to the right be patient because it's probably coming back left. That's the good thing about a veteran defense they seen those tricks before!
