Let me tell you about this statue thing.

It's not a matter of what PSU should do, it's a matter of them making the decision. It their statue and I agree with them about it. Right now most of the people are still in denial. The majority of PSU people are too young to remember a PSU coach other than JP. To them he is PSU Football.
Some of them are in the denial stage, when they resolve this among themselves and reach the anger stage of their emotional roller coaster they will remove every mention of JP from their University. It's Penn State's decision and none of our business.
If the rest of the college football fans and all the media in the world wanted Clemson to remove Howard's rock I'd tell em to go screw themselves and would hope the rest of Clemson would feel the same way.

If Howard actively protected and enabled a child molester on campus, the rock should be removed immediately, along with his name taken off the building.

I think they should leave it. Sure he should have done more and admitted as much. All of this coming out is based on emails, a technology that JP probably didn't even know how to use. Doesn't change what he did for college football nor penn st.
Like you said, if it came out tomorrow that Coach Howard MAY have helped cover up something terrible, Clemson fans and students would surround the rock and dare someone try and remove it.

I said 'if the rest of the world wanted to make us take away The Rock.' I didn't specify a reason, deliberately. In the minds of many PSU fan Joe had no guilt in the matter despite the scathing reports of his contribution to the events. It's called denial.
Right now many of them haven't had time to overcome the emotional dilemma and face the reality that their hero was a shameless glory seeker who accommodated a child rapist. It's called denial a powerful trick played by the human mind.
They'll figure it out with time.

I don't think that at all. Maybe students. PSU board fired JP. They've said his inaction has ruined his legacy. They're not in denial at all. Taking down the statue isn't going to change anything, the situation nor his legacy, and it isn't neccessary....people are just out for blood because apparently firing all involved and due process isn't enough.....

In the end the statue will come down. Never-the-less, it's their decision and not mine.

Wanna bet. SC still hasn't figured out that Pitchfork Ben Tillman was an even bigger scumbag, yet his statute still sits on the statehouse grounds. > They'll figure it out with time.

at the time vs. a man protecting a friend while he raped children. and you think Tillman was worse? How misguided. Typical revisionist history, or people using today's standards to judge those in the past. England enslaved most of the world at one point and killed god knows how many Chinese with opium. How dare we let them host the Olympics this summer.

He knowingly housed a child predator...he didn't need to know how to use technology to differentiate between wrong and right.
Sandusky actually did a lot of good in his life too, but it doesn't erase his crimes.

was more than emails that proved Paterno's guilt. Ge was the most powerful person at PSU, if you think he was not in this up to his eyeballs you are crazy. The Freeh report made it clear Paterno was actively involved and guilty. They interviewed over 400 people and read millions of pages of documents. Paterno is guilty and was a scum bag.

coach so every time you speak of records or accomplishments his name has to be mentioned. Until the correct steps are taken and he is held accountable for what his actions, or lack of actions, were, all of collage football carries the taint.

Many coaches will say something like 'we did execute,' or 'we dropped the ball too many times,' and not take sponsitility for the outcome of the game.
Anyway, you know a tree by it's fruits.

I don't pretend to know the answer to this. But do you think if they left the stature there and added an engraving on it that said something to like- " Always do what is right to protect the children". Could this help remind people that child protect should come first?

I originally thought they should remove it, but now I think

they should remove his name from EVERYTHING but keep the statue and add a plaque that tells the story and that he protected Sandusky and was fired. Removing it will be "out of sight, out of mind" whereas keeping it will always be a reminder of what happened. Dan Patrick talked about how keeping it would keep Paterno on peoples minds as they walk by it and force people to remember him and what he did, which will help prevent it from happening again. I think he has a great point so I changed my mind on this one.

I don't think there's enough evidence to suggest Paterno actively covered anything up, and just not doing enough to stop something you weren't sure was happening shouldn't be enough to force PSU to erase someone like Paterno from their history.

If they leave it up, they will have to guard it 24/7/365 or someone will vandalize it.
