I'm Thinking Bama Had A List

Of coaches they would like to have as replacement for Saban.

I think Dabo was their first choice. I think they started at the top of the list and made contact with each one until one of them showed interest.
There were at least 8 on the list. Kirby was the second call. They probably knew he would say thanks but not interested. No way were they not going to ask Dabo or Kirby.

After those 2, who knows how the list was numbered. But I feel Deboer was not in the top half of the list.
What say yall.

According to insiders at Alabama the first tier was Norvell, then DeBoer then Sark. Dabo was in the second tier. They never contacted anyone outside the first tier.

It's laughable that the Gumps, and SEC conference simps that rely on Bama to make them feel like men, would think it's better to claim their AD would not call two coaches with Bama ties that have won multiple CFPs, to only talk to Norvell and DeBoer - who have no Bama ties nor CFP titles

DeBoer announcing at the press conference that he'd never met the AD until just then, and that he'd never met or even spoken with Nick Saban, proves that Alabama had this planned all along and totally, TOTALLY, got their man.

Obviously.

That position is a no win situation. It will be near impossible to maintain the success that Saban has had, and fans are going to expect nothing less. Afraid they are going to cycle through two or three coaches before they lower expectations.

They didn't get the one they wanted. They went after Norvell hard. I guess it makes you feel inferior they didn't try to get Dabo. Don't worry. That feeling is prevalent in the ACC.

I think the true answer is somewhere in between Vol. We know they called Dabo to at least gauge interest. David Hood doesn’t report that unless it 100% happened. But the timing was immediately before they locked DeBoer down. I think they knew Kirby wouldn’t come, but then struck out on Lanning, Sark and Norvell. I think they reached out to Dabo before going to the Pacific Northwest to get a coach neither Byrne or Saban had ever met or talked to. Dabo said not interested. This would mean DeBoer was somewhere around 4th or 5th on their list.

Most Clemson fans don’t understand all that went down during the DuBose coaching regime at Bama, which Dabo was a part of. Many Bama old timers still hold that against Dabo, even though it’s possible/likely he was not dirty in it all? Plus they had concerns about him not being “player buying friendly!” Bama has always placed a high bar on player buying, even prior to NIL.

In the end, I predict Bama will be greatly remorseful they did not grab Dabo when they could’ve. Sure he gets on nerves but he is a national championship proven head coach recruiting in the south. They will regret this choice.

What do you mean by, "remorseful they did not grab Dabo when they could’ve," does that mean this week?

I don't think they could have gotten Coach Swinney this week even if they had made an official offer.

But earlier? Maybe? Like, perhaps before the first Clemson/Bama national title game I guess?

I still disagree, & notably Saban would have left much sooner & with half as many titles & we didn't yet have one under Coach Swinney.

I hear you on they MIGHT have been able to get Coach Swinney back then if that's what you're trying to say, I'm just glad we stuck with him anyway for sure.

I am not sure if they could have gotten Dabo if they made him their clear #1 target, and offered him $15 million a year. We will never know because they did not do that. What I’m saying is it’s my belief Dabo was a second tier choice behind Lanning, Sark and Norvell. Others take issue with that and say Dabo was their number 1. I think the late timing of the call, confirmed by David Hood, indicates he was a fall back plan.

I’m saying they will live to regret not making Dabo their #1 and offering to pay him bank if they didn’t.

I'm a little conflicted with the idea that, while we both agree Coach Swinney wasn't ever going to take the Alabama job, they should have made him their #1 choice & made him an offer, no matter how high, but knowing he was almost certainly going to turn it down, in which case it also becomes public as well.

The money part is likely & completely incidental at this point so $15m doesn't matter even a little bit, it's just starting to sound less like they were ever sending anyone anywhere but Seattle I guess is all.

Still, while nothing happened at Clemson, it reinvigorated many fans & consequently gave us something to celebrate a little more vocally on Friday. If that's about it, I'd say no news is good news (& somehow this was better than just good news).

I disagree Coach Swinney wasn't called.

It doesn't sound like any of the other clients got an actual offer, though, but saying Dabo didn't even get a phone call seems misguided; even accredited writers like Larry Williams wrote that other non-accredited & anonymous sources confirmed there was at least a phone call.

I just don't think a guy like Larry Williams would falsely report a non-confirmed anonymous source like that if it wasn't at least highly likely to have happened, know what I mean?

Dabo got a call, but we dont know the context.

It could have been any of those things.

It was reported though that he was offered the job & turned it down, or at least implied in a report by an anonymous source so do with that what you will because Larry Williams still put his name on it.

I just think if there had been an offer it wouldn't have been a secret even if they wanted it to be. My guess is this was a deliberate effort to do good things for all these guys under the same agent.

It worked, too.

Yeah, Coach Swinney didn't get a raise or an extension, but that's incidental here. For FSU, Texas, etc., it seemed paramount. It worked to boost our support, if nothing else, but it definitely worked.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A job offer would've been unlikely without an interview.

I assume that Dabo did not interview with Alabama, based on David's post about there only being a brief phone call. However, recent reports about a 48 hour period of time when there was possibly some deliberation in the Swinney household leaves open the possibility of an interview and/or job offer.

Regardless, I'm glad Dabo wants to be at Clemson.

Tennessee was in big trouble. Their previous hire included coaches who actually WERE publicly turning the job down after solid offers in a way we didn't see last week.

They hired & later fired Pruitt, and 3 days later brought in UCF's athletic director, Danny White, who then ultimately "decided" to bring Heupel in with him from UCF.

Like Coach Swinney, remember Coach Elliott (and Buffalo’s Lance Leipold & SMU's Sunny Dykes) was rumored for the Tennessee job, but ultimately they went buddy-buddy with UCF's AD/HC.

We will never know but I would agree with this. I think they knew Kirby would not come, then struck out on Lanning, Sark and Norvell. When they dropped back to DeBoer I think some said wait a minute.. Dabo, even with his portal and NIL dislike, would be better than this Pacific Northwest coach with zero ties to the southeast. I think they called Dabo at that point. Timing of the Bama call to Dabo (David Hood) suggests this to me. We will never know.

I like that Coach Swinney doesn't do a lot of that here at Clemson.

But make no mistake, he's a relentless competitor. If Coach Swinney had to do it that way at Alabama, he would.

He wouldn't like it & likely never will, but it's hard to ignore he really is elite & adjusts how he has to. He doesn't have to at Clemson & has instead built something truly unique (this year is gonna be fun).

A few years ago for Texas A&M at Alabama, Coach Swinney got a standing ovation at halftime when his name was called at midfield. He seemed to love it, & so did they.

I have no doubt Alabama fans would certainly embrace Coach Swinney across nearly their entire fanbase before long even if they have a few fans like we did who wouldn't initially like the hire (albeit we had a lot more of them, but at the time there was vastly more reason to have doubt & virtually no reason to doubt Coach Swinney now).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Their AD was in Seattle, that's where I get stuck

Jan 14, 2024, 5:50 PM
Reply

It sounds like immediately after Saban retired, Alabama's AD flew to Seattle to try to secure DeBoer; he was there Wednesday before dark & apparently didn't return until Friday.

I don't doubt Coach Swinney was called, an the reports seem to be as good for Sarkisian, Kiffin, Norvell & Lanning, all of whom share the same agent.

Some of them got raises & extensions. I'd like to think we didn't have to do that here at Clemson, but notably we weren't the only ones, either.

It seems they got their first choice but also got other clients locked-in & beyond. For us, I'm thankful, even if I had no doubt.

But you always WANT your coach to be in demand for the biggest jobs, rather than insisting immediately on not even having Coach Swinney in the news cycle for those 3 days. I have no doubt any coach who turned down an official offer would have been immediate news as we've seen so often at much worse programs than Alabama, but I'm not convinced they had to settle for their 5th or 6th choice is all, nor am I convinced they wouldn't call Dabo again the next time & possibly with an offer.
