Would have been a great time, during this interview, to question Riley about why we quit running the ball on those drives in the third and 4th quarter. Think had we done that, when Swanson kept pinning them deep with some great punting, we could have put ND away, the way the defense was playing, and gone up two scores. How many times have we seen this in the last several years that we offensively tend to get away from what has been successful getting us to where we are. Mysteriously we will run the football into the red zone and then throw three times in a row. Just glad at this point we now know that Mafah is really the better back. He had a heck of a day against ND and actually played his fastest game this year. Give him the ball and he will get the tough yards.

Keep feeding the hot hand. Let whoever find a rhythm. The other can give him a breather. If the 2nd back gets hot, let him continue.

I just don't understand why both of those two guys aren't in the back field every snap. Both can run over people, and that would keep opposing D guessing who will carry the ball, and it would open up the passing game bc both backs would have to be watched at all times, and then Ship is really good at catching the ball out of the back field. Both guys back there could/would cause problems for the opposing defense in 3 different ways!!!!

Sometimes the simple, most obvious ideas are the best ones.

I agree with you.

That the best way for our offense to function without plagues if turnovers and penalties is with a simple game plan. Scrap the RPO, minimize occasions when sideways passes for WR screens are called in first down or on third and short.

No fancy handoffs. Stop it with the QB draw (high risk for fumble play). Stick to the basic handoffs and …

Run.
The.
Ball.

Shipley and Mafah need to be on the field at the same time for 90% of the snaps (assuming neither is shaking off a big hit at the time).

On pass plays, either one can be the safety valve pass option while the other one has pass protection duties.

We can beat the remaining three teams on our schedule by doing this. And by not fumbling. And by avoiding false starts in the red zone. And by not fumbling. And by not locking onto the primary receiver and forcing a pass in there. And by not fumbling.

Give Mafah the start and the bulk of the load without wearing him down. Bring Shipley in when needed to rest Mafah. .
I think Shipley is a great talent, but his on field maturity has to grow… He often plays overhyped, when you look at Mafah, he’s nice and steady, like some of our other backs that we’ve had, Etienne, just plays the game doesn’t get too high or too low.

If there’s 36 carries to be had, Mafah needs 24 of them and Shipley can get the other 12 to keep Phil fresh. If Shipley doesn’t like it, let him transfer. I’m over the guy. Nothing personal, I just think Mafah is CLEARLY the RB1.

Re: Prepare yourself ...

1

Nov 7, 2023, 1:39 PM

Okay; I'm not making a case for Mafah/Shipley one way or the other. Mafah's carries will probably go up, and he may start. But once Shipley is healthy he will still get a ton of carries and play a significant role, and the offense won't be that much different in that regard. It's going to be a two RB system.

If playing time is truly earned, then Mafah should be RB1. The proof is in the pudding! Whether you go by stats or the eye test, Mafah is clearly better. Still like Shipley as he is a good back and can catch, but Mafah just runs harder and seems more determined on the field. Maybe a few packages with them both on the field, but IMHO Mafah should be RB1.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What proof is that? Shipley has consistently outperformed Phil

Nov 7, 2023, 9:10 AM

No one is hating on Shipley, just stating facts. Love Shipley and what he's done for Clemson, but that's irrelevant. It wasn't just him being out of the ND game, it's been apparent all year that Mafah is the better runner. If they were true to their words, they'd put the best 11 out there and that means Mafah as RB1. No hate and I 'd like to see both on the field in some packages as they both have something different to offer.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The two back set is not a cop out

Nov 7, 2023, 5:49 PM

Too much angst about whether Shipley or Mafah should start.

The answer that is best for our new, toned-down offense is the two back set. Especially now that Antonio Williams is out, both Shipley and Mafah are Option #1 for the offense. Even Briningstool is not an Option #1 as an offensive weapon because of his position as a TE.

With the two back set -&- J.B. in the field at the same time, we have three players that may be called on for critical interior blocking, or to be deployed as the guy who gets the ball.

The name of the game in offense is to maximize occasions to get the ball into a playmaker’s hands. If we do this effectively enough, then our secondary options (our WR’s) will get open for big plays and chunk plays.

It all starts with utilization of the 2 back set.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The real problem is that Shipley in getting too many touches esp

1

Nov 7, 2023, 8:47 AM

inside. His touches should be more out in space. Possibly he needs to change to slot? And keep returning kick offs. Run Mafah and Thomas more and Shipley less.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Now THATS a valid point. Mafah is the power option.

Nov 7, 2023, 9:14 AM

Shipley will start though. He earned it over 3 years, and he won’t lose it based on one game where he wasn’t able to play.

Nov 7, 2023, 5:55 PM [ in reply to The real problem is that Shipley in getting too many touches esp ]

Shipley is better at inside runs because he is a bit quicker with lateral movement than Mafah. Quickness to adjust to hitting a ‘secondary’ crack in the line (as opposed to running straight into the [hoped for] hole that was the design of the running play) is Shipley’s forte.

Mafah’s strength is breaking the tackle attempts by LBs and DBs; his ability to do this surpasses Shipley’s ability. Mafah, however, doesn’t break the tackle attempts by a DL. Neither does Shipley. Therefore, Shipley is better at avoiding being hit by a DT or DE because he can better squeeze into those unexpected cracks in the line than any other RB on our team.

Did Dominique Thomas get inured in the first half?

1

Nov 7, 2023, 8:53 AM

I was surprised he wasn't on the field, at all, in the 2nd unless I missed it. Dude was grinding it and playing with purpose and seemed he would have been a needed spell for Mafah to help keep #7 a little fresher there in the closing minutes. You could tell Mafah was gassed late and that fumble was a telltale sign. Love that he gave it his all like he did but at some point you start setting ourselves up for failure going to the well too often.

Go Tigers! Beat the Bees!

Re: Did Dominique Thomas get inured in the first half?

Nov 7, 2023, 6:00 PM

I agree with you entirely.

D.Thomas showed that he could get critical yardage against ND’s excellent defensive front, and could do so when the ND defense was still fresh.

Did you wonder if Clemson’s coaches had lost a bit of focus on winning the game by getting Mafah the all-time Tiger RB record for most carries in a game? Probably not, but it’s hard to completely dismiss that our coaches may have deluded themselves into ignoring the risk that a tired Mafah Man might be more likely to fumble than a fresh Quadzilla.

I think if Shipley remains RB1, Mafah's maybe playing against Clemson next year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mafah is better for this OL b/c he shows patience, vision, jump cuts.

1

Nov 7, 2023, 10:36 AM

If the OL were blowing open big holes, Shipley might be the better choice. But Ship is too impatient to let the hold develop and often running right into walls. Mafah should get the bulk of the carries.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mafah 2/3 of carries, Shipley to to relieve him, and get Thomas a handful

1

Nov 7, 2023, 11:00 AM

With our lack of Oline this year, Mafah's size is needed. Ship is just too small to create a hole. DT was able to break through more than Ship. I love Ship, but Mafah needs to start and carry the load.
Ship could also play a slot receiver.

Re: TNET: Riley addresses making sure Phil Mafah and Will Shipley both get touches

Nov 7, 2023, 11:15 AM

I haven't understood the ratio of touches between Phil and Will all season... nor the choice of where and when to use them. I admire the passion and effort that Will plays with... he's quick and fast, but he's not big and strong enough to run in the middle as much as he does. He's just too impatient and he can't break tackles that well. Using him on the goal line makes no sense either. Physics don't lie... use your muscle and weight when you need a yard. I've seen a few comments about using him in the slot. I think that's a great idea! He's got pretty good hands, so give him some space!

Phil was impressive on Saturday. Very impressive! He showed he is the better back. He should therefore be the starter, but that's not going to happen. At minimum, please "start" him in goal line situations or when we need a yard! If we don't, I will NEVER understand it!!

Re: TNET: Riley addresses making sure Phil Mafah and Will Shipley both get touches

Nov 7, 2023, 2:29 PM

Shipley is a gritty running back, but Mafah seems to find the ability to exploit the gaps and get yards after first contact as well. At times, Shipley runs into the back of the offensive linemen and gets tackled almost immediately. I will say that Shipley has earned playing time as well as Mafah.

Heeeeeyyyyy Garrett, Mafah is a big strong fast horse, you keep riding that big horse til he's tired,
and if you notice these big strong horses don't get tired, they keep getting stronger and the defenses start tiring down as the game goes on.

Ship is a great all around athlete, he has great hands and shifty moves in the open field, you and Dabo need to seriously look at putting him in the slot, he would be one hellava slot receiver just like Hunter Renfro..

Can Tyler get the word to these people!!! or anyone have a hottt line to the Coaches.
