You guys are smarter than me, so ponder this:
My Turtle Pond is about 4000 gallons which would equate to about 100 gallons per inch as it ranges from about 40-45 inches (sides are straight down, no slope) in depth. Surface area is 150sqft.
So if we get an inch of rain, that would add about 100 gallons to the pond?
In January we got over 10 inches, so about 1000 gallons.
My old home had no gutters, but put them on this one. 1/4 of my roof (say 500sqft) is now being directed to this pond, so that adds at least 250 gallons per inch of rain, probably more.
I believe this would suggest about 3500 gallons of free rain water entered my pond in January.
As all know, the best thing for aquariums and ponds is replacing a percentage of old water with fresh on a regular basis. I don't mean topping off from dehydration, but draining old water and refilling. This reduces nitrate, etc in the water. Rainfall is one reason outdoor ponds are much easier to maintain than aquariums.
Average monthly rainfall in my yard is around 4.5 inches, no matter the month. Some months we get more, some less. An average input of free rain water should be about 450 gallons every month. Adding the roof water adds at least another 1000.
So roughly, is 1500+ gallons of free water a month a good guess?

Not exactly sure what the question is - but your math is close.
27154 gal per acre inch water -
43560 sq. ft per acre.
150 sq ft is .003444 ac - so 93.51 gal per inch
if you add the roof at 500 to now 650 sq. ft or .14922 acres - you are adding 405 gal per inch rain.
or 1823 gal at 4.5 in per mo.
at 43 inches - pond is holding 4021 gal.

Because Clemson made me take math, scored high on Army tests and they sent me to Artillery which is all about math. Now it is computer, but then it was slide rule.

A couple inches of evaporation have no effect and the pond fills to top with the next rain.

Is rain water safe?
I don't think many critters in their normal environment in the UpState are having a problem with it.
Rain does tend to be acidic. Is it more so in places like Atlanta and Charlotte and less here in the UpState woods?
For fun I need to start collecting rain and testing.
I just tested my pond after 10+ January inches and it is 7.2.
I need to test Lake Hartwell from time to time.
I just support gold fish, tadpoles and turtles. I believe a ph range of 6+ is Ok for them, but try to stay around 7 by adding alkaline. My 50 year experience is folks with an aquarium/etc who do not keep up with ph always fail.
Hobbies are fun, I have been successfully keeping critters in water since 1970 and have read lots of crap as to it over the years. Don't believe most things you read on the net.

Tug, you should consider adding ammonia (nitrogen) consuming plants like duck weed or hyacinth. Hyacinth is an exotic so it needs to be carefully managed but duckweed is not. Certain plants would help manage your ammonia plus give turtles food. But you may consider a couple tilapia annually as they will die after extended weather below 50 degrees. They will eat feces, scrap food the turtles miss and will eat plants if they run out of the higher energy stuff. Just a thought.

Those die off in my area, add them back each spring.
I have ivy, painted fern and a gum tree growing 100% from the water nutrients as there is no soil. All planted themselves there.

The hyacinth will die, then it will sink and create more food for turtles but those plants will seed when they bloom. If you had to much growth you would have to scoop the sinking plants out.

We don’t have near the acid deposition problem here as what they have up in the Smokies. The Smokies gets their acid rain from the Ohio River Valley. You should not have a pH problem with your pond from acid deposition.

Integrals kicked my rear, 201 or 202. I had AP Calculus in HS so I did ok in 101 and 102. But I didnt pass the HS test to get my 3hrs of credit before college.

In the day the annual trip to Myrtle was with lots of relatives. Car inner tubes were taken to ride the surf. One year Uncle Harold made seats that fit inside them for us kids.
Inner tubes are banned there now, and kinda hard to find.

I have that on over kill. I have a commercial level air pump and waterfalls.
My old pond (17 years) has no problem as to O2,

The only problem course I had at Clemson was calculus, and that was due to a terrible professor. I had a good professor the second time around and did well. After finishing the final exam, I had no doubt about a good grade, but I still hated that department.
When leaving, I kissed the door. I kissed that building goodbye and swore to myself to never enter it again. I did enter the building about 50 years later before a football game and visited my old math classroom. I kissed that same door again and have not been back.

Yes, and the deal there is what kills aquarium owners. Adding new water to evaporation is not the same as drawing off old water. Water changes are the best friend of water critters. No filter can do that.
My pond overflows as rain falls.

If I weigh 200lbs, at 6'1", with a body mass index of about 20, and a history of prostate and throat cancer, how many ounces of battery acid per minute would I need to drink before (a) this post stops hurting my brain, and (b) before someone else makes a reply, perpetuating my attraction to its responses? Also, if I drink it standing on my head, would it reverse its effects on me and take me back in time to the exact place I was at, doing the exact thing I was doing, right before I started reading it?
But seriously, I have to admit, I read every reply. Good job Tug. Good job.
