If you guys haven't seen it, Maui is going through some devastating fires in really their most iconic tourist area. The entire town of Lahaina is "ashes." More than just the impact on tourism, locals are going to be hit incredibly hard. Rebuilding on top of losing their sources of income. Maui is one of my favorite places on Earth, and it just is heartbreaking to see. The severity and the swiftness completely caught people off guard. This is from the sailing excursion company we love:

Apparently 911 is out and Fire Dept can't even respond to most. And not like trucks can drive in from next county or state.
Fires on the Big Island too but not that bad and not near populated areas.

Evac routes. One main road going through it, so very easy to get trapped.

A car accident will bring 30 south to a standstill for a long time. I can't imagine what chaos an emergency evacuation would bring. People had to swim for their lives.

That really is sad. I was there almost 40 years ago before things were developed nearly as much as now. Sailed to Lanai which at that time had no fancy hotels and was primarily owned by Dole Pineapple Company.It's crazy now to see what's happened there.
Had a great time in Lahaina and elsewhere on Maui. That's tough to see what became of an old whaling town turned tourist town.
