Illegal Immigrants

Why are they coming over? What's the motivation and intent?

I worked in construction in Florida back in the early 2000s and, it turned out, we had some illegals (they had documentation, but turned out to be falsified - unbeknownst to the guys; they'd been ripped off/scammed by the whomever they connected with in Mexico to get into the US - not uncommon at all). I also worked with several other Latinos back then, indirectly, and I never knew their immigration status.

Most Latinos I worked with and knew of:
* worked hard
* came into the US to work hard and make some money - for opportunity, education, security
* most of them sent a good chunk of their money back home to family who had stayed
* family people - several families will stay in one house until they have saved up enough money to branch out
* want to make money and subsequently want to keep as much of their money as possible, which is counter to many stereotypes and assumptions of them

In any people group, there are those that have bad intentions and look to game the system. But from what I know and have seen, that's the distinct minority of immigrants, illegal or legal.

Others have said that they're coming over because of all the freebies from the Biden/Obama administrations - health care, phones, etc. I'm sure there are a few motivated by that. I'm wondering where that information comes from. First hand speaking with the immigrants? Or blind assumptions?

Just curious. My opinion comes from first-hand knowledge and previous experiences with illegal and legal immigrants. Where do the other opinions come from, other than assumptions?

How is that DEI? DEI is a joke. Hiring Americans first should be a priority. We have plenty of capable citizens to cover every job in America. DEI advocates hiring people bc of their skin color and gender. I’m talking about giving tax paying citizens priority over “refugees”, illegal immigrants, or green card holders.

Just curious. There aren't the same quality of jobs and life in every country. I thought that was pretty common knowledge.

Just talking about the Latinos, here.

I'm definitely against the open borders for this very reason - you don't know who's coming in and why, and what health conditions they might be bringing in as well. Immigration is what this country was built on. LEGAL immigration. Illegal immigration is hurting us, in many ways, and literally killing us in specific situations, like we saw down in Athens last week.

Illegal Immigrants. Figure 2 and Table 2 indicate that households headed by illegal immigrants, also called the undocumented or unauthorized, have higher overall welfare use rates than the U.S.-born and the difference is statistically significant. We estimate that 59.4 percent of illegal immigrant households use one or more welfare programs. Compared to the U.S.-born, illegal-headed households use every program at statistically significant higher rates than the U.S.-born, except for SSI, TANF, and housing. Even the larger share of illegal immigrant-headed households using three or more programs at 35.5 percent (shown at the bottom of Table 2) is statistically significant relative to U.S.-born households.14 Assuming our estimates are correct, the SIPP data indicates that use of the welfare system by illegal immigrant households is extremely common. It is also important to note that we have no evidence that their use rates reflect cheating or fraud. Their high rates of welfare use primarily reflect their generally lower education levels and their resulting low-incomes, coupled with the large share who have U.S.-born children who are eligible for all welfare programs from birth.

Fair enough

Feb 28, 2024, 10:51 AM

That's what I was looking for. Not to argue, but just wondering where the information came from, vs mine coming from my own experiences, which admittedly are extremely limited.

I think it's important to note that the study defines "welfare" pretty broadly, including school lunch programs and other things we don't typically associate with "welfare."

This is an interesting comment as well, that ties in my experiences:
"Immigrant households are more likely to have a worker present than households headed by the U.S.-born. But all eight major programs (SSI, TANF, EITC, school meals, WIC, SNAP, Medicaid, and housing) examined in the report can be received by workers or members of their households if incomes are low enough.

"It is also the case that the presence of extended family or unrelated individuals does not explain immigrant households’ heavy use of welfare. When we look at only households comprised of nuclear families, which constitute the overwhelming majority of immigrant and U.S.-born households, the gap between the two groups remains about the same."

And I'll take my lumps on this one:
"There is an unfortunate tendency for many to think of immigrants one-dimensionally. This is especially true in the business community, where they are seen simply as workers. But this ignores the enormous impact immigrants have on American society, including the welfare system. Given their welfare use rates, knowledge of government programs is clearly extensive in immigrant communities. To be sure, use of welfare is only one facet of immigration. But the impact immigrants are having on the welfare system and public coffers at least needs to be part of the immigration debate."

CIS.ORG is a far right anti immigration think tank.

Along with stricter asylum laws and greater immigration court capacity to handle asylum claims. Otherwise executive orders and agency policies will get tied up in Courts _ based on underlying laws. If Congress does their job, then the executive branch and administrative agencies will have clear boundaries to comply with the applicable immigration laws.

Now we are left with the POTUS having to go all cowboy with EOs and lawyers getting rich in courts.

Most are coming for a chance at a better economic opportunity, some for asylum as their lives are in danger.

Some are probably coming to visit harm on us at some point. Unvetted people from countries not friendly to us are definitely coming in.

I don't care why they are coming.

Biden needs to reverse some of the 94 Executive Orders he reversed to tighten up things a bit. His actions have exacerbated this problem. He is not powerless as he has said, to do anything. He has no problem openly defying the Supreme Court to forgive student debt. He is not powerless to do anything about the border.

I would suggest if he continues to claim he can't do anything about this problem, that he campaign on that.Haley, Trump or Kennedy would all do something to tighten up the border

In the meantime, Congress needs to get off its ### and pass a bill that actually secures the border while providing an orderly process to allow true asylum seekers in and workers in that we need, but not every person from across the world looking for a job.

I'm not holding my breath.

people who have come here from other countries. Mostly Mexico and Central America and some South America; but quite a few from Russia and eastern Europe as well. All have come here for a better life; for freedom and opportunity. There may well be many who are here for freebies; I'm sure there are, but all of the ones I know are here to work, and work they do. One, about my age, has become my friend. He came here illegally, but has been here since the early 80s. He has raised a family, sent a couple of his kids to college, and built a business. He and those like him are not the problem. What we are facing now is very different, and a much bigger, out of control problem, and unfortunately, fixing the problem, which absolutely must be done, will prevent people like my friend from building such a life. The U.S. simply cannot take every single person on earth, or in this hemisphere, or in Mexico or Central America, who wants to come here for a better life. Pretending that such a thing is possible, or would be good for America, is the problem, and demonizing people who acknowledge that reality only makes it worse.

we have that now) and it can't be done based on the ridiculous belief that we can and should take anyone and everyone who is in a bad or worse situation. There is no reason for border policy to be complicated; rather it should be simple and straightforward, based on the following principles and priorities:

1. The United States is a sovereign nation with borders, which must be recognized and respected.

2. Any non-citizen entering the U.S. for the purposes of taking up residence and living here, must do so for the benefit of U.S. citizens, being able to support themselves without government aid, unless

3. Their lives are in danger or they are being persecuted in their own country by having recognized human rights violated. There will be a cap on the number of such asylum cases, keeping those numbers at a reasonable, manageable level, that is not detrimental to the U.S. or it's citizens.

4. Anyone seeking entry into the U.S. must go through any and all required processes before being allowed entry.

5. Once all of the above are observed and stictly followed, only then are any improvemnts or changes allowed to improve the process or make it easier for immigrants to enter the U.S.

I know - every "institute" has some bias or something. But you gotta get your information from somewhere, and then try to piece together the truth. Or "your" truth. Or whatever. CATO is a self-described "libertarian" think tank, which typically would mean they lean to the right. Started by one of the Koch brothers.

https://www.cato.org/blog/us-labor-market-explains-most-increase-illegal-immigration

"The surprising conclusion from the above figures is that the enforcement policies of the Bush and Biden administrations look like they had a similar effect on southwest Border Patrol flows, relative to the labor market. Also, the Obama and Trump eras look about the same, controlling for the labor market. The unsurprising conclusion is that the strength or weakness of the US labor market can explain much, and I’d wager most, of the flow of illegal immigrants across the SW border.

"The economic gains from working in the United States mostly explain why immigrants want to come here in the first place and the dearth of visas is why so many come illegally. However, the state of the US economy and labor market should be the first explanation that people consider when explaining changes in the flow of illegal immigrants. Policy matters, but the economy matters more."
