Met a retired Army chaplain today and told him

Jul 27, 2022, 3:05 PM

my airborne school story about the chaplain whose hands went from the outside of the plane's door to the inside when the jumpmaster yelled "Go!" ....... he got a good laugh about my thought, "If the preacher won't jump, what am I doing up here?"

what am I doin

Jul 27, 2022, 4:50 PM

I knew a guy who was an Army Chaplin in VN.
He was also a grad of Duke.
He ran a pawn shop in Charlotte and was about the best con/hustler I have ever met. My hat is off to him.
When in town, Michael Jordan played poker and golf with him.

Once a couple guys hit Charlotte selling diamonds. These were high teck with just a thin diamond plate on the top. They fooled all the buyers as they showed real under the tests they used. Most shops snapped them up and lost a lot of money, but not the old Chaplin.
I asked why he was not fooled.

He said, "I don't know much about diamonds, but I know a lot about people".

Clover, my hat is off to you for jumping in the Nam. i was in the Army Infantry
before Nam and was in Alaska for two years. We were Mountain Soldiers but had
to fly on c19 flying boxcars and Chinooks. I know that you probably jumped from
a c123. We wore D ring parachutes but wasn't Airborne trained. Those birds had
two engines and fire would fly from the back of the motors and we were in terrible
snow storms.

Lucky that we have a lot of hidden dirt runways in Alaska to save the day.

As a young Navy pilot in the 1980's, I would see our Chaplain at the O'club every Friday evening. He said you could learn much more about your congregation on a Friday night than you ever could on a Sunday morning. What a great American and man of God he was. Still keep in touch with him to this day.

My Army Chaplin story……

When I was going through basic at Fort Knox, we were allowed to go to Chapel for one hour on Sunday. That first Sunday at Chapel, after experiencing those first several days of ear blasting, vein popping, top of the lungs screaming…..the serenity of it was absolutely divine.

Thank you for your service!

I’m so grateful I was a baby in 1968 and didn’t have to go to war, especially in Vietnam. My uncles and family were involved in serving in WW1, WW2 & Vietnam.

The stories break my heart hearing how they lost their best friends and buddies right beside them and had to continue to fight or they would have died. They always say they wondered why they weren’t taken instead.

I’m so thankful for all who have served this country to protect our freedoms.

Gotta love the Padres....had a Navy Chaps in Desert Storm with us Marines

Jul 28, 2022, 6:56 AM

Catholic Priest from Worcester, Massachusetts, Father Kersten, who cussed. Marines LOVED the guy. I asked him why he cussed and he gave me a 5 minute dissertation on how the only real curse word is GD, because it is the Lord's name in vein. All others are slang words that humans made bad because of culture, etc.....he blessed my St. Christopher and St. Michael medals on my dog tag chain that I still wear today. We absolutely LOVED that Padre except for his constant Red Sux, Celtics, Bruins, and Pats blabbering. Never seen a chaps more revered.

Thanks for your service under such extreme conditions. Very blessed I was able to avoid that part of the world between '67 and '71. A cousin from G'ville was in the 82nd. Jumped on D-day and like many missed the drop zone and landed near a large enemy group. Captured after two days fighting a spent the next nine months or so in Dresden. Amazing any POWs there survived the bombing.
