My idiotic thoughts on the Heisman

Nov 17, 2015, 7:50 PM

Should Watson should be the front runner for the Heisman this year? I do not know, but I do believe it was a huge injustice when Spiller was left out.

Spiller , by the stats and IMO, was clearly the front runner for the Heisman. The only thing that hurt him was playing for a team that wasn't on an elite level. Had he played for Bama he would have been a lock. He was a game changer behind a subpar O-line. His highlight reel was and still is a thing of beauty.

Now Watson who is clearly the best QB in the nation, I may be a little biased, but he doesn't have the best individual stats. However how would his stats look if he played the whole game, every game? This is pure speculation but I once again believe his stats would be dominant. If you follow Clemson closely like most T-netters do, you know Watson hasn't enjoyed watching his back-ups play.

I believe Dabo did what was in best interest letting the back-ups play. I know a lot of coaches would have left Watson in to pad his stats to help ensure a Heisman trophy, but Dabo is doing what is best for the team. I am sure Watson agrees. While it would be a huge individual accomplishment for Watson to win the trophy, the team comes first.

In the end the NFL scouts will not care about who won the trophy but will see Watson's potential, and he will earn a huge paycheck.

Heisman is nice, nice for the school, nice for the player and team, but this is a team game.

Spiller is one reason we are who we are today.

And should have won the Heisman.

yep that changed our recruiting and the whole dynamic of the program. getting him is also a key reason dabo got the job on an interim basis

ill add my idiotic thought

The trophy ends up being more of an award for the school than for the player.

There seem to have been a lot of heisman NFL busts. Maybe the expectations are too high.

Successful NFL players are remembered for their pro accomplishments. Heisman NFL busts can point to the trophy, but they're still remembered for a poor pro showing. Their college, however, will brag on that Heisman forever without any ties to what happened afterward.

It's a fickle situation.

I agree about Spiller and suspect your justifications are likely accurate. I'll add another instance; Dantzler. We had a two man offense with him and Priester. He broke NCAA records and, when healthy, was every bit as good as Vick.

As for Watson, I think he is still not the guy we saw last year. He has continued to show us more of what we saw, but he hasn't given us much "wow" this season whereas as last season it was an every game occurrence. I suspect Watson, and the entire team will be better next season. So, I'll not be offended if he doesn't make the cut this year.
