My recruiting star rating theory - for slow Friday

Dec 16, 2022, 10:46 AM

I am definitely not the first person to discuss this, but as it’s slow news day, I figured it might be good for discussion.

Texas A&M has had monster high star rankings the past few years.
#1 in 2022
#8 in 2021
#6 in 2020
Yet with all that star power - a 5-7 record.

Bama continues to have high classes.
#2 in 2022
#1 in 2021
#2 in 2020
Yet missed the playoffs and while still good, is not the same as several years ago.

Notre Dame - recruits high, performs marginal.

The entire SEC gets massive stars, but under performs based on stars.

Miami is back based on recruits, same.

IMO, The dominants of Bama, TAM, the majority of the SEC (with the current exception of UGA), Miami, and yes now Clemson - are driving stars and player rankings higher - simply by making them an offer.
Interesting how when an offer is made by the blue bloods of today (or the SEC bias) - that the next time those players are ranked, they almost always move up and seldom down the ESPN 300, etc.
why is that?

I believe it is simply analysts being lazy and “thinking” that if Bama is offering, then they must be really good. That is not to say they are not good, but I believe they move higher just because they were offered.

How many times does Clemson make an offer to a 3 star and BAM (technical term) other schools start offering and the player moved up to a high 3 or maybe a 4 star.

Does all of this really matter? Not really. What it does do is affects our expectations of that player. For instance - QBs - we expect a 5 star to be ready to play day 1. A 4 star, not as much. What if they were really a 4 star who just got pushed up?

Few players imo are “ Can’t miss”. Trevor Lawrence is one that comes to mind.
Some of Clemson’s best teams were driven by 3-4 stars. We don’t have to get the 5 star and high 4 stars - especially when IMO - many are “pushed up” - due to offers. Perhaps we got caught up in that these past couple of years. Stars don’t win games, players do.

Anyway, it is something to ponder on a slow Friday.

Go Tigers!

I do think there is some truth to what you are saying about offers pumping up a recruit. I always like to look at the highlights myself.

I think some positions are easier to evaluate and see than others. For example, I wasn't hugely impressed with our RB recruit's highlights. No offense to him but the OL looked like some kids we should go after.

I remember watching Cade’s highlights last year and thinking man, I really would like for that receiver to come with him. I don’t even remember the receiver’s name but he looked like Mike Williams out there and it made me a little curious if he was making Cade look good or was Cade making him look good. As usual, the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle, but some of the balls he was catching were definitely 50/50 balls.

I thought the same thing...

But Greathouse was a great WR and a four-star recruit too. Plays for ND.

Yes. That receiver was good. Jaden Greathouse. 6'1" 220 and could run. He committed early to Notre Dame and never wavered off his commitment.

In what way does the SEC underperform?

Dec 16, 2022, 1:31 PM

They've been far and away the best conference for the last 17 years. SEC teams have won 12 of the last 16 titles and 5 different SEC teams have titles during that time frame.
