Riley and Cade....

4

Oct 8, 2023, 7:01 PM

Cade clearly took a step back against Wake but he didn't throw any intercepts or even close to doing so, win. He scrambled well, win.

My question is this...does Riley simply need more time with this offense and with Cade specifically, or are there too many other problems to get the offense to be much more productive THIS YEAR?

Should we just prepare ourselves for a bumpy ride this year knowing we WILL get better next year or to continue to hope that Saturday was just a bad day and with Williams back this offense will look different?

He had several that were close. One that was a terrible decision throwing all the way across the field into triple coverage. He was lucky we were playing a less talented defense.

The problem I see is that Dabo is too involved. He needs to step back and let Riley take over. I watched the Oklahoma game and in all of the offensive huddles and timeouts I never once saw BV in there. Riley is a great offensive coordinator but until he gets full control to run HIS offense NOT “Clemson’s” offense (whatever that is) we’ll never see his potential here and he won’t stick around.

Correct! Dabo never shuts up during sideline meetings and time outs. The coordinators cannot get a word in.

They are both way overrated, especially Riley. Our offense is putrid.

Re: Riley and Cade....

Oct 8, 2023, 8:29 PM [ in reply to Re: Riley and Cade.... ]

Dabo makes decisions about whether or not to go for it on 4th down, or whether to punt / kick FG.

He, like nearly all HCs, communicates constantly with his offense coordinator when possessing the ball. Dabo is also in constant contact with the defense coordinator when we are playing defense. His action to call time outs when the players aren’t aligned properly for the formation of the moment are presumably from some combination of his own making + input from Goodwin / Riley + input from the booth.

Cade should've played more last year.

Riley is NOT in complete control of playcalling...at this time....

Yep, its going to be bumpy for sure until we clean up some things and get totally on board with the new-age way of doing things. The GOOD news, as I have repeated here ad-nauseum, is change is coming..Dabo completely understands that now. But don't wait around for him to tell you that...will never happen. I'm just glad the needed "tweaks" are coming

And, almost every single player I am really excited about is young: Brown, Parker, Woods, Barnes, etc.

If he can keep these young guys together, they will get better, especially Cade… i worry the NIL hawks are already going after our guys…..

Cade just needs more time, he’s got the talent and smarts, just needs the confidence and for the game to slow down a bit……

Why WILL we be better?

Oct 8, 2023, 7:51 PM

I’m asking a sincere question. Will our WR’s block better with another year in the weight room? Will our Oline stop missing assignments and getting false start penalties inside the 5? Those seem like coaching deficiencies and that isn’t changing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Which coach tells the OL to false start?

Oct 8, 2023, 8:05 PM

Give me a name? The players are human and despite how many times you teach them sometimes false starts will occur. A guard or tackle may get called for it, but it may have been the center's fault. I saw once when all four guards and tackles moved, but the center didn't snap the ball.

Re: Which coach tells the OL to false start?

Oct 8, 2023, 8:23 PM

Um, every coach tells players not to have false starts.

..:: ru4god2 ::..

You are certainly correct.

Oct 8, 2023, 9:17 PM [ in reply to Which coach tells the OL to false start? ]

Coaches don’t want their players to perform poorly but at some point are to blame for REPEATED poor performance. Can you honestly say that this team Oline is disciplined? One or two mistakes is on the player, repeated mistakes and missed assignments regardless of who’s playing falls on the coaches.

Personal thoughts:

1. I feel like they intentionally played vanilla this week. Unfortunately, vanilla play Saturday + uninspired play = whatever that was.

2. CK2 had a case of happy feet on Saturday. Idk if it was boredom (by accounts he's a bit... restless when sitting still) or just pressing to make plays. As many others have commented, maybe didn't see the field well for whatever reason.

3. Lesser teams = not as interested for a young talented squad.

I feel like the bigger games ahead (Miami, ND, UNC, and SC) the boys will perform closer to FSU. NCST and Ga Tech may be closer than you want and if they play like they did today or vs Duke then they are potential Ls too.

Overall, I think next year is gonna be better barring catastrophes -- got some great talent coming in that also has some speed. Next year's offense has the potential to be good to great.

Now, does that mean we won't make changes? Idk -- Dabo may or may not and I'm sure a lot of us wouldn't mind some new blood with experience to be brought in to help out. Same with the portal. Gonna be another fun off-season to watch.

As for this year....who knows -- we could easily go 10-2 or 6-6. Im expecting more bumps but hoping the offense hits their stride come November.

It has always been said that it takes a couple of off season for a new coordinator to get his program fully installed and understood, this coming off season will be Garretts second off season....

My thinking

1

Oct 8, 2023, 8:23 PM

I don't think Riley would ha e come if the deal wasn't that he would have almost but not absolute control. Why would any HC go completely hands off. I know I would be in the loop for every offensive play. Not micro-managing but aware. Not calling a bunch of plays but knowing what the play caller is seeing. They may be seeing the same things but think differently on how to counter or exploit it. Basically letting the OC do his thing, maybe a suggestion or "here's what I'm seeing" kind of thing but ultimately the HC a maintains veto power in the rare instance the HC feels like he needs to use it.

Dabo ain't paying Riley that kind of money if he's calling plays himself. Dabo is involved but not dictating a much on playcalling. He is very aware that he was not very successful when he and Napier called plays. That was the reason he went and got Chad Morris. Did he interject himself when Morris was OC? Not that I'm aware of. Coaches love working for and with Dabo. If he micromanaged his coordinators or even position coaches do you think they'd be happy to stay on year after year? No. People dont continue to work under the thumb of a boss that has to have control of every decision even though he has subordinates that he pays to do that job. If that were the case you'd see turnovers in the staff all the time. If your boss doesn't respect you enough to trust your judgement in your field of expertise, are you going to stay? Nope.

DABO is very involved in playcalling.....

Re: DABO is very involved in playcalling.....

Oct 8, 2023, 8:31 PM

NO ONE can deny Dabo talks to the sideline huddle of our offense, and Riley doesn’t get two words in. You don’t need access to the headset to see that. I’ve been there live right behind the bench and I’ve rewatched every game. Make no mistake, Dabo runs those huddles. Not sure who is calling the plays. But we know who is running the game time decisions. And I am ok with that.

Re: My thinking

Oct 8, 2023, 8:38 PM [ in reply to My thinking ]

I think that Riley knew that TCU was going to lose their key playmakers on offense, and was ready to bolt when the first big time school called.

Riley’s ‘genius’ reputation would have been destroyed had he stayed at TCU for another year.

That said, he is an upgrade (albeit an expensive one) over Streeter. Our blocking schemes are better, and our WRs run a wider variety of routes. Riley is making progress in improving ck2, but another half year or maybe more will elapse before CK2 is ready to perform consistently at a high level.

This isn’t a criticism of CK2. Few QBs come straight from HS to college and become immediate super stars. Justin Fields comes to mind as one such HS QB that took a couple of years before ascending to stardom.

I see the rest of the season as just getting better for next year and beating the coots this year. I just want to see improvement all year so we can be excited for next year.

Betty Davis had it right:

Oct 8, 2023, 10:28 PM

"Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy ride". From the movie, "All About Eve". In this case, the movie is "All About Cade". But the demon pursuing him is not a starstruck wannabe movie star, it's the demon of low-risk. The low intercept thing is pretty simple. Play it safe, no risk, no reward. Sure, his intercepts are low, but everything's dink and dunk, and on a few long passes, he's gotten lucky that there was no intercept, and Riley and him and the O are running pretty scared with any long balls.

The ride is going to be bumpier than the Clemson Douthit intersection where they installed the nettlesome speed bumps.

Re: Riley and Cade....

Don't think Riley and Cade are on the same page yet...WRs need to do a better job finding open spots and Cade needs to lose the DJ stare! We can win the rest of our games with a great D but we can't impress anyone with a1/2assed offense...pass and win is still the dream but far from reality!

Dabo needs to stop dabbling. If he doesn’t trust his staff then he needs to get a new staff. His job is to hire the right people and then get out of their way and let them do their jobs. He seems like the constant micromanager and that is not having a positive impact.

Love him to death but we all need wake up calls from time to time.
