Nasty in the Trenches

After watching the Oregon and Stanford game last night I feel my beliefs were confirmed.....again. It seems year in and year out the spread offense looks great until it gets punched in the mouth by a physical football team. This is the one thing that scares me about Clemson adopting the spread. The spread is almost perfect at beating inferior teams with inferior talent, but when a smashmouth teams comes along then the spread seems to get beat. I believe that is a reason why only one spread offense, Auburn, has won a championship. Even Auburn ran the football well with Newton and Dyer and played opportunistic defense. The trenches are where the game is won. I want to see Clemson start getting those War Daddies in the middle and start owning the trenches. Hope we find a little nastiness about us this week against Ga. Tech and ESPECIALLY when we roll down to that prison looking thing in the middle of an asphalt field in Cootville.

be about the Line of Scrimmage, being fundamentally sound, and playing physical at the point of attack.

As they say, and have for a long time, the games are won or lost on the lines of scrimmage. Win that battle every week, and the rest will come.

groundbreaking stuff

all the coaches do is talk about how they want to run the football and be more physical on the lines... as much as I like Rod, we are feeling what its like after almost a decade of having a stable at RB (Davis to Spiller to Ellington).
Every football coach in America knows where the game is won and lost and they all want it. Tell us something we don't know.

Well, some of them don't seem to know about it, because some of them don't put much emphasis on it. If you remember TB wanted thinner more athletic OL who could run more. That has haunted us for a long time. Now, our lack of reputation as an avenue for linemen into the NFL hurts our recruiting in that area. More focus and emphasis on the OL will change that, but it is a slow process.

Lets remember that Oklahoma is not a great team, they got hammered by Texas. That was Baylors first real game and they won, congratulations. Jury is still out on them. Got to look at consistency not just one game in one season.

It's hard to have a smashmouth D ...

.. when you practice against a spread finesse offense. It's not impossible, but harder I think.

The spread sure worked against "physical football teams"
Nov 8, 2013, 8:39 AM
|

when UF was running it in '08 and Auburn in '10. Worked for Tebow, Newton, and Manziel to win Heisman's.
Seemed to work for us vs. LSU.
Did Oregon get physically outmatched last night? Yes absolutely. Does that mean that style of play always loses out in those games? No...

Lets remember that those teams may have run spread attacks but it wasn't a spread attack that was not physical. Florida was physical with Tebow and so was Auburn with Newton. Also, Florida had a pretty NASTY defense if I remember correctly, not to mention a stellar offensive line. Yes it worked against LSU and I was there and probably the happiest person in the stadium, but it did take us 104 plays to score 25 points. The reason we won that game.....defense.
