How likely is it that the recent numbers coming out are completely fabricated

regarding how many people watched a girl's basketball game and how attendance INCREASED in the NBA ?
With all the manipulation going on - saying these pretty staggering numbers - which are put out by the people who stand to benefit from the numbers being high - does nothing but line the pockets of the broadcasting entities, sponsorship sellers, etc.
I can't believe the numbers I am seeing . . . . defies logic based on where we is as a peeps right now and how we spend our free time & dollars.

I watched my one basketball game for the year. That should do me for at least another year.

0% they are completely fabricated. 100% chance they are using favorable methods.

But also there was DEFINITELY more interest in NCAAW hoops this year, and NBA definitely did some stuff to boost interest (in-season tourney and battle royale for seeding the last weekend of play).
My wife, who DGAF about basketball in general, watched part of the women's draft last night.

men's team. I think this anomaly is completely dependent upon breakout stories like Clark or Staley, but no reason to doubt the anomaly is mostly true for this year because of them.

that advertisers are taking the networks' word for the numbers and don't have their own means of verifying what is reported.
This reads like you can't believe a women's sporting event not named Olympic gymnastics can pull a big number because you don't like or understand it. I won't accuse you of that though.

NBA's product has gotten a lot better the past few years

I think the days of super teams are over, teams that are drafting well and developing talent are rising to the top. Which helps a lot of those smaller market teams be competitive, so I can see where attendance has increased across the board. LA is always going to have a crowd turn out regardless of how good the team is, I wouldn't think that is the case for teams like OKC, Minnesota, Indiana, etc. But now pretty much everyone is competitive.
Women's basketball has been pushed HARD in media the past few years, pure speculation on my part but I wonder if that is due to ESPN, TNT, etc. knowing that NBA won't consider new media deals without including WNBA, so it's to everyone's benefit to push the brand as much as possible.

I'm wondering if all the attention that women's college b-ball

got this year will actaully translate. The sport has moved past the days when the Vols or UConn had the single best player and thus won everything. I guess as the game has been pushed more women are sticking to it thus more good players.
I don't know if there will be carryover. While I can tell you that the Las Vegas WNBA team has won back to back, I can't tell you when the season starts nor name a player on the team.

IMO a lot of people are looking for new ways to support their college/team outside of mens football and basketball because of all the NIL bs and how they've been bastardized. I don't know enough about it to say, but I am assuming women's teams tend to stick together and develop much more than their mens counterparts, largely due to NIL money, or lack thereof. Our mens basketball team is liable to not have a single starter from this year next season, that gets old.
Really, the only reason to donate to something like IPTAY these days is to support those women's teams and other smaller revenue sports. Cause football sure as helll doesn't need it for scholarships anymore.

but still. This season the women had more name recognition of stars. I think this problem still plagues men's hoops. It will stay that way until the NBA players collective bargain the one and done rule out.

basketball is dead because I don't watch it.
ha
but I think both experienced growth. I watch zero basketball and I even knew about the caitlin clark chick, and the LSU chicks...so there's a lot of chatter on the line bout it.
based on my understanding of ticket prices, the consumer broadly hanging by a thread, and the increased costs of everything, I have to admit I'd be a little surprised to see in-game, physical attendance increasing at NBA games. however, I also think it was near all-time lows, right? no where to go but up?
I've looked at zero numbers, nor do I plan to, just speculating around the coffee pot this mawn.
but good for those leagues and good for those athletes. the world needs more sports, IMO.

Great points - if at the bottom the last few years, no place to go but up. . . .

and no, aerozeptallica, no hate or sexism or rassists or such - just no interest and based on a VERY small data set, nobody I know has any interest in 1. watching women's hoops (although several of us like ladies softball) or 2. going to an NBA game in Orlando . . . I think most would say they probably wouldn't walk across the street even if the tickets were free,
And a lot of folks on here talk about what a joke it is that the chickens get so fired up about their women's team - a lot of folks expressing the sentiments I kinda have.
I think Beamer & Staley are the same punchline to the joke - they are chickens . . . and one of them has a buncha national championships in a sport the vast majority of people don't know or care about.
If we won a national championship in baseball - I'd probably be there in person to witness it and I'd be cloud high excited . . . . but 95% of everyone else couldn't possibly care less.
I say it is similar to - come see the Michael Jordan of cricket across the street - the greatest cricket player to ever play the game . . . . and there is FREE BEER.
I'd say - what kinda beer - they say {insert macro beer pisswater beer name here} Light . . . I'd say - nahhhh - I'm good - thanks, tho.
Or - maybe I do hate women, black folks, athletes, buildings that host events . . . . who knows.

Consider this with viewership

For the game this year. It was on every #### TV in the Charlotte airport. I'm sure it was on every bar in America. I can't remember a time when that happened with a women's championship game.
So I think just the hype of the game increased public viewership everywhere.
