That was absolutely a safety.

It was not. Never in the history of college football can a defender initiate contact with a player in the field of play outside the end zone and get a safety. Forward progress is stopped at that moment.

It was close. It was hard to tell where the ball was when the hit was made. That's why the call stood.

only way i can figure was ruled like "forward progess stopped" before the endzone on the field. but that should have been overturned, so...

After officiating high school football for the last 42 years that was a safety by all rules.
Contact does not stop forward progress.
All of the hall has to be out of the end zone. Didn’t they spot the ball on the one? No way was the ball at the one.
