Non-Revenue-Sports Scholarships

Jun 2, 2019, 6:30 PM

Why do schools give scholarships to athletes in sports that very few people care about or go to see? Do the athletes really add that much to the university to make it worthwhile? What sports would you keep - football, basketball, baseball, softball?, soccer?, tennis? What would you not offer scholarships for - rowing?, golf? I don't even know what all sports Clemson gives scholarships for. What other uses could that money be put to - academic scholarships? Improved facilities?

Did you ever wonder, why

The private universities tend to do better in the non-revenue sports, basketball perhaps, aside? There's a reason...and it's a reason public schools can't compete with.

Wrong. I’ve heard you use that argument before but I wasn’t aware that Oklahoma State was a private school? Or Texas? Alabama? UGA? Florida or Fla St. LSU... although these schools seem to compete regularly in non revenue sports and win championships.

Psst, you do know that without all those non-revenue sports Clemson doesn’t play football right? Title IX ensures that is the case. It is very simple, 20 rowing scholarships offset 20 football scholarships. Now if you don’t want a football team go ahead and start thinking about how you can cut all the non-revenue sports.

I see your point - John .... but I've always viewed.....

... the athletic scholarships in the same vein as academic scholarships ... giving a young person the opportunity to obtain a good college education. Everybody - well almost everybody - has to face life as a normal employee at some point - and a college education can give them a leg up in this endeavor.

If people were as good as their obituary - and products were as good as advertised - this would truly be a wonderful world !!
