Observations and perspective from Week 1

Sep 6, 2023, 9:06 AM

Now that this past weekend has come and gone, here are some observations from Monday night and what to expect moving forward this season:

1) 422 yards of offense for CU vs. 374 yards of offense for Duke. Similar, but this is where intangibles are killer.

2) QB-1 was 27-43 for 209 yards (average of 4.9 yds/play). Against Duke. Shedeur Sanders was 38-47 for 510 yards (average of 10.9 yds/play). Against TCU. A National Championship game team from last season.
This is not to compare Cade to Sanders, but merely to note that Colorado's entire football team is almost all new, and to say that TCU is prolly a tougher venue than Duke.

3) Turnovers, especially redzone turnovers, are brutal. After PM's fumble at the 1, it was kinda comical at that point. Two first and goals from the 1, with no points. And another possession inside the 10 with no points.

4) The defense (so far) under Goodwin does not appear to move as much pre-snap. We are set, and the only movement you see is if there is motion. The ole 'hurry-up and wait' offense can see this, look to the sideline for adjustments, and then make their read.

5) Still not a fan of the 3-down linemen sets on D.

6) Blocked FG's, missed FG's ... hence intangibles.

7) We either have a play-not-to-lose mentality, or we just aren't that talented.

8) I sure do miss the days of Nuke, Sammy, Mike Williams, Artavis Scott, Amari Rogers, Hunter Renfrow, Martavis Bryant, Jaron Brown, Charone Peake, Deon Cain, Ray Ray, Jordan Leggett, etc. Love some Cole Turner, but if that is our #1 option at boundary, it'll be a long season.

9) The sideways passes are back! Sigh.

10) Tyler Brown and TJ Parker looked really good for their first game in orange.

Listen - Dabo is our guy. I wouldn't want it any other way. What a blessing it is to have him as our leader. If you didn't live through the post Danny years, then you don't realize just how rough we had become during the Hatfield and West tenures. Say what you will, but coaches like Bowden, Rodriguez, and Chad Morris all did great things to help elevate our program to where it is today. NOBODY stays on top forever. Lets just hope we are competitive the rest of this season, and can rebuild for 2024.
Who knows, it might even be in a different conference.

Everybody makes mistakes or has an error or two in judgement- let's see how Dabo responds before we all go off the deep end.

The 3 DL set is not working.

The biggest 2 concerns for me were

Sep 6, 2023, 9:46 AM

1. Cade making what appeared to be poor pass decisions and seemed uneasy in the pocket a lot of the time.

I blame this on the coaches not letting him play more snaps in games where he wasn’t being asked to save DJs butt. Just play regular game snaps when the game wasn’t already in jeopardy. They really didn’t prep him last year.

2. The lack of fundamentals like blocking, tackling, ball security, setting the edge and lack of containment on D, catching the ball, etc.

It is like we are regressing not progressing in the fundamentals. Never mind not being able to pass downfield or over the middle or get separation.

I bet Shipley is pissed. He played his butt off!

I saw too much lollygagging

No one likes lollygaggers
