Deep thoughts generational question..........

Mar 29, 2013, 10:52 AM

So I was pretty much in the last generation that grew up without Internet being a constant companion, and I probably wouldn't have it any other way---that leads me to my question:

Is anyone who was in the same boat as me jelly of those who grew up with Interwebs?

Anyone who grew up with it wish they hadn't?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

without the interwebs, I wouldn't have any of you

Mar 29, 2013, 10:53 AM

which leads me to think that my life would've been exponentially better and more productive without it

Mar 29, 2013, 10:55 AM

I didn't have a home computer until maybe 8th grade. Playing outside was till a thing. Riding bikes, going fishing, and the like. But then by high school when all I really wanted to do was see some #####, they were all around. I can't see how my childhood could have been better with more internet.

can't really remember when we got it. We moved from Charleston to the DC area, and my dad's new employer gave it to him. Otherwise I'm not sure when we would've gotten a computer.

Oddly, the Internets makes you smarter AND dumber at the same time. Makes you dependent, instead of having to actually retain knowledge.

cell phone cameras actually came around...

Mar 29, 2013, 11:04 AM [ in reply to I thank God daily that there were no cell phone cameras ]

after the internet was a big deal. I think we had dial up by the time I was a sophomore or junior in HS, but I didn't have a cell phone until I graduated from HS in '03. I don't think any phones had cameras back then, either, and nobody really texted.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I was able to avoid texting for a long time.

Mar 29, 2013, 11:08 AM

first cell phone was a work issued phone in 2002. I sold for Sprint. I did some texting on the old Motorola razor, but didn't become a fiend until I got a blackberry. I got that maybe 3 months before the first iPhone.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

never texted until I dated a girl that did...

Mar 29, 2013, 11:16 AM

and that was senior year of college, back in '07. Still not a lot of people were texting then, which is kinda crazy to think about considering that was only 5 years ago.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

AOL and dial up just came along when I was a pre-teen.

Mar 29, 2013, 10:57 AM

I wish I was growing up with it now. There is so much opportunity for ####, and to see naked classmates out there. Teenagers are idiots.

badge-ringofhonor-clemsonsteve02.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I didn't really have it until towards the end of HS

Mar 29, 2013, 11:03 AM

it definitely helped with studying, and it has greatly improved connectivity. I'm not going to say I wish I didn't have it for most of my life, but I also see some of the downsides to instant gratification you can get with the internet. I think it's taken a toll on the sort of effort it takes have real social virtues and real community.

Hughes Middle School, circa 1995

Mar 29, 2013, 11:03 AM

I was in 7th grade and the school had just gotten internet. For some reason, there was no firewall in our computer lab at that time and a bunch of us 12-13 year olds discovered hotbabes.com. Probably one of the greatest days that school will ever have.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

ah, the early days

Mar 29, 2013, 11:06 AM [ in reply to Hughes Middle School, circa 1995 ]

almost nobody seemed to know about all the uses the internet could be put to, so nobody had thought about firewalls. I remember we had the internet at school, but it was so slow and so new that nobody really used it. I think we mostly used those computers to play Oregon Trail and Sim City.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Absolutely not.

Mar 29, 2013, 11:06 AM

With the advent of the internet also came the felony charges for the kind of normal, everyday debauchery that was merely "kids having a little fun" back in my day. The young'uns may hear those stories, but they truly have no clue what we ACTUALLY got away with back in those times. The lack of the ability to document it with tiny handheld digital devices and instantaneously share it with the world forever doomed that life and times to little more than legend.

The first major communications advance I remember...

Mar 29, 2013, 12:02 PM

... was the touch tone phone. Growing up, we had a party line and rotary dial, but at least we didn't have to turn the crank and ask for Sarah. While I'm a little ambivalent about being old, I'm glad I've been around to see things that even Capt. James ByGod Kirk never imagined. Now if we could just figure out that transporter thing...

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You must also remember

Mar 29, 2013, 12:20 PM

when color t.v. was a BIG Deal! I remember watching the Friday Night Fights with Grandfather and uncle on a t.v. that had lines and snow so bad. And that was modern at the time.

They give me a hard time at work for my lack of computer savvy. Truth is the young guns all envy my experiences and knowledge of how to make everything else work. They are forever asking how to garden, construction, house maintenance, hunt, engines, etc. Of course, I am always researching on the net about how to do more stuff. But you've got to have a basic knowledge to understand how to swing the hammer and turn the screw. It's not all information. A good deal is technique.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh yeah. when DIY wasn't trendy...

Mar 29, 2013, 12:42 PM

God knows what sort of trouble I would have been in if facebook and cell phone cameras existed while I was in high school. Those disposable cameras were enough trouble.
